The schools that are no longer teaching kids to read books

Reading is hard for many American students. Though the pandemic has been an oft-cited reason for lagging reading-proficiency scores, the mass shutdown of schools likely only made a tough problem worse. In New York City, a new initiative called NYC Reads attempts to close that gap by teaching the science of reading in classrooms—an approach that relies on the understanding that phonics, vocabulary development, and content and context comprehension are all necessary for students to become strong readers and writers. But what this initiative might ultimately do, Xochitl Gonzalez writes, is create an environment in which “learning to read will no longer revolve around books.”

The alleged culprit of this bookless era is called, ironically, myBook. Part of the third curriculum offered by NYC Reads, it replaces individual books with one textbook for each grade that’s filled with lessons on phonics for younger kids and longer narrative excerpts for older ones. Some schools, such as the Brooklyn School of Inquiry, have already mounted opposition to myBook. “The data for this year aren’t in yet,” Gonzalez writes, “but the student reviews are: They miss books. And they’re bored.”

Welcome to the new world….its different if you dont read a book because you don’t understand the book …..if you understand but not interested and finally you don’t read because there are other ways to gain knowledge……etc it’s a very interesting topic. All in all every child will take his/her/their own path and will start to read ….. and they are audiobooks too I do hours of reading everday … but hardly a book. Maybe you won’t even need math 🧮 or science or even school anymore, You just need a super computer friend? 😱👍👍👍🌈🌈🌈🌈just not break law …like the movie Longan’s Run 👍👍👍👍🌈🌈🌈

Kinds won't fall in love with reading due to the promotion of 30 second video content that acts as a spoon feeding. The analytical and patience level is dropping.

There were no books in my home when I was a small boy, but we lived across the road from the public library. That twist of fate made it possible for me to spend hours, days, weeks, months and years surrounded by any book I could imagine. It changed my life for the better. While neither of my parents finished high school, I taught at the university level. I tip my hat to all the librarians out there who have time to talk to small boys looking for a good book.😊
