The Secrets To Successfully Creating a Budget For Your Home Business
As a small business professional, the creation of a budget for your home business is vital to the success of your enterprise.
In today’s post, I want to share with you a system for creating a budget for your home business and how to change your money blueprint for 2015, so you can manifest the intentions you desire for your business.
The fact of the matter is that in my time in practice in my financial services career, I have seen small businesses fail because they don’t know how to account for their cash flow.
1. Create Business Accounts for Different Functions
In business, it is vital to have a business entity for asset protection purposes ( that is a different topic for another day) and also a business account.
Now just one business account?
NO!
So here is a template for you to follow and percentages that account for your business revenue to be allocated in a conducive fashion.
A. Operations – 40 percent
You must have an account that addresses tools, subscriptions for different affiliate accounts, your salary ( you are the CEO of your business – you must pay yourself a salary from your business) and your overall ability to have a functioning business. This is the purpose of your operations account – set aside at least 40 percent of your business revenue to account for these initiatives.
B. Travel – 10 percent
Travel expenses are something that need to be itemized every single year in order to be in compliance with the IRS. So having a separate travel account allows you to itemize your air travel, ground transportation, hotel expenses etc into a neat spreadsheet that your CPA can follow. Plus, having a travel account allows you to budget for conferences etc that you will have to attend in your home business.
C. Marketing – 20 percent
Marketing is the backbone of your enterprise. A multi-millionaire in the home business industry told me – Roger, take 20 percent of your revenue and place it into marketing your business. Paid advertising like Solo Ads, PPC etc allow you to scale up your business faster when you have revenues that are earmarked for that purpose.
D. Taxes – 20 percent
Taxes are something that are vital to account for. Having your account funded on a quarterly basis based on a conservative outlook of revenue for the year is key to ensuring you have the proper amount of money set aside to pay Uncle Sam. You can adjust the percentage based on your situation, however you must have this account set up.
E. Giving – 10 percent
Giving to a charity or other worthwhile cause is awesome and should be accounted for.
As a rule of thumb, if the gift exceeds a certain value and the Internal Revenue Service catches it, you could be forced to pay the tax as well as interest, and, in some cases, penalties.
Here’s how to use the yearly and lifetime limits to best advantage and avoid lurking tax traps.
Write a check for up to $14,000. The simplest way to subsidize others is by using the annual exclusion, which allows you to give $14,000 in cash or other assets each year to each of as many individuals as you want.
Check with your CPA as to the nature of this tip and how it applies to your situation.
There you have it my friend. This is a solid structure in how to create a budget for your home business.
As you allocate your revenues in this manner, you can have more clarity to plan effectively and be able to forecast things moving forward with conviction rather than being on your heels.
