Selecting the right CEO
Many a Companies can get doomed if its CEO is not selected properly. The vision of the Company, its growth, its public image – all depend upon who is at the helm of affairs in the Company. A wrong choice and not only the Company’s image can take a mar but its growth verticals can concurrently take a nose-dive. Hence, for business interests, it would be better if a few principal qualities can be ensured in a candidate before placing him at the numero uno position.
1) He should be a visionary. A person who dreams big dreams is the one who can shape a long term vision for the Company. Someone who works only for today or tomorrow is merely a Manager.
2) He should think out of the box. This is an extension of being a visionary. He should not only think of new ideas for current horizontal and vertical growth but also have innovative ideas for creating a future big Corporate empire.
3) He should give first importance to his human resource. A successful CEO starts building an empire by first establishing a cord with his employees. An Organization is nothing but its people. He listens to them, grooms them for meeting his vision for the Company. And in doing so, he is democratic, i.e listens to everyone and not just a handful who have access to him, and also gives them space and power to work independently and give their best. He is true motivator and knows how to align all his resources, including the human resources, to meet the goals. He makes the Company what it is.
4) He is a people’s person. He has no qualms in meeting and directly talking to the last man in his chain and takes the direct feedback about the Management of the Company and values his views regarding Company’s growth and problems, if any, in the chain. He values his people.
5) He is a man of values. He not only has and follows highest values in his personal life but also carries it as a professional. A person of low values will never get the due respect and can harm business with his vested interests.
6) He as much involves himself in Corporate social responsibility as in Company’s growth financials. He truly believes that what goes around, comes around. He spends equal time and resources on social causes.
A right CEO is a complete human being – a visionary, a professional, a people’s person, a man of values, a compassionate human being.
