September Edition

Hello from Frankfurt,

How was your August? A traditional holiday month in the northern hemisphere, it can be a good time for those in the office to make headway on longer term projects or think about new ideas.

For us at Deutsche Bank, it has been anything but quiet. The past few weeks have seen lots of activity from all corners of our business.

From investment and corporate banking deals to top career tips, there’s something for everyone in this month’s newsletter – so let’s get to it.

Happy reading!

Helping LATAM Airlines reach new heights

We’re heading to the skies for our first story with LATAM Airlines , which we recently supported in its return to the New York Stock Exchange ( NYSE ). The group raised 456 million US dollars in the listing - the first by a Chilean issuer since 2012. The transaction is an important post-pandemic step for Latin America’s largest passenger airline group as it aims to strengthen its financial situation and expand its market footprint.

The transaction also underscores our leadership across global aviation and the strength of our Latin American investment banking business.

Incentivising sustainable practices in Asia

Moving the needle on sustainability requires innovative solutions. And our recent partnership with BASF is an example of just that.

We have helped the multinational chemical company launch a solution linking the payables-finance programme for its Chinese subsidiaries to their suppliers’ sustainability progress. Payables-finance programmes provide the suppliers with the opportunity to access finance via their clients. The solution will measure the suppliers’ sustainability-related performance and encourage them - via incentives in the financing - to adopt sustainable practices.

Ole Matthiessen , our Head of Deutsche Bank Corporate Bank for Asia Pacific, Middle East and Africa and Global Head of Cash Management, said: “We are strongly committed to our sustainability strategy and helping our clients find innovative new solutions that not only improve resilience of their supply chains, but also advance their sustainability footprint to future-proof their operations.”

Committed to Türkiye for over a century

The year is 1909. On a busy street in downtown Constantinople – the Turkish city known today as Istanbul – a German bank is celebrating the opening of its first branch in the country. Fast forward and that single branch has since grown to become a fully licensed bank - Deutsche Bank A.Ş. - with a strong presence in Istanbul.

16 August 2024 marked 115 years of Deutsche Bank in Türkiye. Today, we support the Turkish economy via its institutions, businesses and key infrastructure projects. We are also one of the top banks for foreign investors interested in Turkish assets and financial instruments. Here’s to the next century together!

What does an onion have to do with cybercrime?

Digitalisation is boosting our productivity. But going digital brings new risks, and companies are looking to strengthen their defences against hackers who can bring their business to a standstill.

By 2022, more or less every company in Germany had fallen victim to hackers at least once, according to a study by the German digital association Bitkom.

In the latest edition of our What Next series, our security experts, Sven Schaumann and Petra Leclaire , shared their insights into how cybercrime is evolving, what hackers want to achieve and how we can protect ourselves against cyber-attacks (spoiler: this is where the onion comes in).

One way that companies can do this is by using layers, like an onion protects its core. If you remove one layer of protection, there is still another one underneath it.

Delve deeper into the world of preventing cybercrime in our What Next series.

Supporting female economic independence in India

In partnership with the CmF - Centre for microFinance , we recently launched a project empowering 480 women farmers in the state of Rajasthan, India. They will be running a mustard and groundnut oil processing unit producing 50,000 litres of oil each year. This will increase their annual income, allow them to take charge of their livelihoods and foster financial stability for their families.

The project is a powerful step towards sustainable agriculture and economic independence for these women. It is part of a three-year project implemented by Deutsche Bank and CmF across 40 villages in Dausa, Rajasthan, to introduce 3,000 female farmers to climate-smart agricultural practices.

Top people story

Chasing the dawn in Paris

As dusk set in across Paris on 10 August, Cristen Kuwe from our Singapore office was limbering up to run the first-ever Marathon for All at the 2024 Summer Games. Tracing the official marathon route through the capital’s historic streets all the way to Versailles, the event gave amateur runners the chance to follow in the footsteps (quite literally!) of the elite athletes.

To qualify for the race, Cristen had to earn 100,000 points over two years by running thousands of miles and taking part in monthly challenges. Describing running as a “way to stay sane amongst the hustle and bustle of life,” Cristen is a seasoned pro, having run 21 marathons since 2006.

Amazing work, Cristen!

As we write this, the 2024 Paralympics are just kicking off – good luck to all those participating! But before they got underway, we took a moment to congratulate the athletes that travelled with Team Germany for the first round of the Olympics. A total of 427 athletes (plus 44 substitutes) represented Germany in Paris. What’s more, an impressive 409 of them have at some point received support from Sports Aid ( Sporthilfe ), the German foundation we have worked with for more than 20 years.

A cornerstone of this partnership is the Deutsche Bank Sports Scholarship, which helps student athletes combine competitive sports with a professional career. At this year’s Games, 39 current scholarship holders competed - we’re proud to have supported you on this journey!

Congratulations as well to former scholarship holder and our current brand ambassador Oliver Zeidler for winning Gold in the men's single sculls! What a testament to your strength and ambition as an athlete!
