Service Tip 101: Stocking Spare Parts

On-hand Spare Parts

Machinery can wear down over time and parts will fail. Don’t let the unexpected take your entire production line down. Of course we can’t predict when failure will happen, but we can plan for it. Taking the necessary steps now to be ready for equipment breakage will not only ensure production uptime, but it’ll make you look like the hero when catastrophe strikes.

Real World Anecdote

Eagle Product Inspection recently had a customer whose x-ray machine curtains had worn out over time. Curtains shield users from radiation that is emitting from the machine when x-rays are energized, so it is crucial to have them functioning properly for safety purposes. While an Eagle service technician was performing the annual performance verification on the system, he discovered the machine tested over the maximum level of emissions allowed by regulatory standards. Luckily the customer had some extra material we could make curtains from, but if they hadn’t, the Eagle technician would’ve had to remove the non-compliant machine from service—stopping the entire production line—until the customer could order and receive new ones.

Take the time to learn about the wear parts for the machines in your facility. What gets the most usage? Which are the most expensive to replace?

Be Ready for Anything

Basically anything that moves and creates friction can wear out over time. Make a list of wear parts for the machines on your production floor. Analyze how often those parts are being replaced and figure out what items you can stock so that a lost key or broken belt doesn’t take your entire production line down.
