Shining a light on gender bias

Shining a light on gender bias

How would you feel if the comments in the film below were directed at you?

There are still too few women in the workplace. In the 21st century that is unacceptable.

Shell is doing many things to improve the gender balance of our workforce. We are focusing on attracting, developing and promoting more women, and we are supporting initiatives that encourage girls to study science, technology and engineering.

But we also need to create the right culture and environment, one where people are aware of the impact of their words and actions. Even small conversations that are biased - consciously or unconsciously - can undermine people's confidence and cut short careers.

I encourage you to imagine how you would feel if the comments in this film were directed at you. And let us all, men and women, take steps to make our workplaces more equal.

Thank you for making this video, it's important for people, men especially, to understand the subtle patronizing comments women are subjected to in all of their environments. Change starts with every person checking in with their own biases first, and I hope seeing this video will help others to do so. However, if companies want more women to stay in their careers, then they must offer paid parental leave for both sexes. Upon becoming parents, women are forced to decide if it's "worth it" to keep working, whereas most men do not even think of the question. If we want 50/50 men and women in the workplace, then we need 50/50 men and women taking care of the work at home, and company policies to support this.

Be the difference. Close the gender gap. Make the future.  Well said, Ben van Beurden!
