A simple way to handle complex data threats

The rising value of enterprise data has made the world of cybersecurity a complex one. It is logical that hackers would target a business for financial gain, but now they have other, less predictable motives.

Some would hack a business to make a political statement while others are targeting firms to teach them a lesson. Take the example of the recent attack on a medical center in the Middle East. The analysis showed the hackers wanted to highlight their cybersecurity shortfalls. The attack which breached confidential employee and patient data, warned organizations of the need for robust security systems. In my mind, this example tells us a lot about what is expected from businesses that hold data.

In our hyper-connected world, we know that security isn’t the only concern for customers. They also expect constant availability from the applications and digital platforms. These two priorities, security and availability, go hand in hand, because when you successfully secure data from breaches, you also keep applications running smoothly.

Hence, the need to constantly update and refine your data security strategy becomes crystal clear.

While data is crucial to any successful business, the challenge today, is to secure your enterprise data from an increasing number of vulnerabilities.

The process of simplifying data protection and recovery may appear difficult, but technology makes it straight forward. IBM has automated crucial deployment steps and integrated best practices from across industries to ease the burden on system administrators.

To meet the demand for scalability, today’s platforms are also making great use of the cloud. Backup information can be replicated between servers across one environment or from a physical location to the cloud without the need for extra hardware or gateways, reducing cost and complexity.

Bringing down cost and complexity is one of the most common goals I constantly hear from my clients. IT leaders are now expected to do more with the same sized budget, but they can get around this obstacle by investing in an advanced system that saves money.

Meeting this challenge was partly why we recently updated IBM Spectrum Protect, a full suite of hybrid cloud backup and recovery systems that allows enterprises to leverage a pay-as-you-go pricing, and reduce the cost of total infrastructure by 53% while paying for the level of support they actually need. This was endorsed by Gartner who named IBM Spectrum Protect a LEADER in the 2016 Magic Quadrant for Data Centre Backup and Recovery Software
