Is Social Media Part of Your Recruiting Process
Social media has become a huge part of our lives, affecting everything from how we interact with our friends and family to how we do business. Social hiring, or social recruiting, has become more popular in recent years and many HR Managers and recruiters believe it is a must in the hiring process. With many going to social media to look for work and network, it makes it much easier to find possible candidates even for the jobs that are hardest to fill.
But don't assume that this means using LinkedIn and that's it. Yes, LinkedIn is a huge platform that is perfect for recruiters and even has paid features created specifically for hiring, but it goes far beyond that. There are many networks you can use to find your ideal employees.
We'll start with LinkedIn because it's the most obvious. All executives, HR professionals, and anyone that ever has to hire in their line of work should be familiar with and active on LinkedIn. In short, it is a platform built around networking for business purposes. Users' profiles are essentially their CVs, which makes searching for candidates based on skill, past experiences, and current title very easy. In-depth search requires a paid profile, but you can benefit from LinkedIn with its free features if you have the time to be active. Besides searching for people based on their profiles, you can join hiring groups and post the job you're hiring for.
Unlike LinkedIn, this platform is not for business networking. That doesn't mean you shouldn't use it to hire. Finding people using Facebook's search is not easy or useful, but you can find many groups for job seekers. Join all of the groups relevant to your HR needs and post in the ones that are relevant to the specific job you're looking to fill. Don't just post once and leave. Read other people's posts and see if you can find candidates. If you don't get any responses, you can bump your post up by commenting on it, or just post it again with different wording after a few days.
This platform moves at a much faster pace than the previous two and can be very daunting for those who aren't already using it. Posting jobs on Twitter can get you the results you want if your target audience uses it, which is something you'll need to research. If your target audience is active on Twitter, tweet the job you're looking to fill with a link to more details and relevant hashtags. You'll have to research which hashtags are best for your tweet and you can try different ones each time. I use Tagboard, which shows you the latest tweet for each hashtag and how often it's used. The big ones are #hiring, #jobs, #work. Don't forget to add the location to the tweet and upload it using different wording about twice to five times a day at different times.
Reddit is huge, but like Twitter, you should see if your audience is there. Reddit works differently than other platforms and if you have never used it before, it could take time to understand it and use it properly. You'll want to find subreddits, equivalent to the groups on Facebook, that are relevant to the job you are looking to fill and post there.
There are a number of different platforms that you can consider, such as Pinterest, Instagram, and Google+, but these should only be used if the job is somehow relevant to the platform. For example, if you're hiring for a fashion-related business, Pinterest and Instagram are a great choice.
