Sports Headlines - July'21 Week 2

With a lot of action happening around the sports fraternity, the second week of July 2021 is packed with thrilling action. So here is a look into the schedule for this week among the other sports I follow.

Football:

2 major tournaments are going on side by side with Euro 2020 and Copa America 2021, both reaching their Semi Final stage. In Euro 2020, While Italy has won their 1st Semi Finals over Spain, the fans will now look towards the next game between England and Denmark which will confirm the Top 2 sides going head on head for the trophy. The host nation England is favourites to win the title for the first time however the Denmark side is high on confidence and with emotional support behind them (because of the unfortunate incident with Christian Eriksen), you just cannot rule out them out of the game. The final of Euro 2020 will be played at Wembley Stadium, London on 12th July’21 12:30am IST.

In Copa America 2021, we are at the final stage of the competition with 2 biggest giants (Brazil and Argentina) set to play the big finals at Maracanã Stadium, Brazil on 11th July’21 5:30am IST. Earlier in the first semi-finals, we saw Brazil take on Peru, which was won by the host nation Brazil by 1-0 with the goal from Lucas Paquetá. In the second semi-finals this morning, we saw Argentina take on Columbia for the seat in the finals. The game was draw 1-1 till the final time with goals from Lautaro Martinez and Luis Diaz for their respective teams. However, In the penalty shootout, Argentina were clearly the better team with Emiliano Martínez, the Argentina Goalkeeper saving 3 of the 5 shots in the shootout. The finals match is going to highlight some key battles (Messi vs Neymar) with Brazil as favourites & defending champions but Argentina having lost 4 finals since 1993 (their last win was in 1993), will look to bring the drought to an end.

Tennis:

The Wimbledon is the oldest tennis tournament in the world and is widely regarded as the most prestigious of all. The biggest Tennis Tournaments has reached the Quarters stage in all the forms (other than mixed doubles) and now the week will be packed with action where we might see some big upsets. In Men’s Singles, we have the top 8 contenders in the quarters and having already seen some big upsets (Hubert Hurkacz beating Daniil Medvedev & the young star Felix Auger Aliassime beating Alexander Zverev), the action ahead will surely give us some wonderful rallies and moments to remember. The top seed Novak Djokovic is among the top 8 and is looking really strong to win the title but we also have Roger Federer, a man who is nearly 40 years of age (oldest to reach Wimbledon Quarter Finals) & with most Wimbledon titles, probably playing his last and looking to win it.

In Women’s Singles, the top 4 players (Ashleigh Barty vs Angelique Kerber and Karolína Plíšková vs Aryna Sabalenka) will compete in the semi-finals for a place in the finals. The top seed player, Ashleigh Barty will take on the 2018 winner, Angelique Kerber in the 1st Semi-final whereas the second seed player Aryna Sabalenka will take on Karolína Plíšková in the 2nd Semi Finals.
