Spot On Insurance Welcomes Justin Fowler

Talking with Justin Fowler brought me as close to crying as any interview we’ve done for the Spot On Insurance podcast. He has such an attitude of gratitude for the opportunities he’s had! Justin also shows so much appreciation for the insurance industry’s ability to create better lives for those working in it and for the people we serve.

Justin is the co-founder and web developer for NinjaRater.com. This innovative product is the first comparative rater for workers compensation insurance in California. The rater produces accurate estimates for all major carriers in seconds using only four variables. The platform now boasts over three million business records, and it’s still growing!

Workers compensation insurance is Justin’s passion. He takes us through WC 101, including explaining key terms and concepts such as experience modification factor and retrospective rating plan. Justin shares the evolution of his approach to automating the rating process, and we explore the challenges involved in achieving buy-in for technologies that don’t have an obvious ROI. This leads to a discussion of how focus on the customer experience – driven by external pressure from clients – encourages insurance agencies and companies to invest in tools to help those working on the front lines.
