Starting Climate Conversations

Starting Climate Conversations

I know most accountants and other professional advisers want to do more to tackle climate change but they often don’t know where to start.

Here are some ideas to start climate conversations with your clients.

You are looking for the “climate gateway drugs” to spark action & start journeys.

We are looking for impacts at low cost & effort as the first actions. We are not looking for perfection!

Banking – Does your money get used by your bank to promote climate recovery or climate destruction? It is so easy to change your bank and you can make a big impact.

Remember your clients see who you bank with when they pay you. Banking with HSBC/Barclays sends a very loud signal – that doesn’t align with a sustainable business (be consistent with your values).

Pensions and investment – Do you know the real impact of your pensions and investments?

There are brands who are greenwashing in this area and others who won't provide the information. If your adviser can't provide the information or tries to talk you out of sustainable investments – switch to Independent Financial Advisers who specialise in sustainable investments! Heating costs – Could they save money and reduce their carbon footprint?

Switching to 100% renewable tariffs can take < 1 hour and can make a huge impact on your carbon footprint.

Insulation and LEDs are relatively cheap and can have a payback of < 1 year.

Property emission audits can be revealing and grants often are available to pay for them.

Travel and motor – How can they reduce travel costs and reduce their carbon footprint?

Hard to see how you lose from a Cycling and walking first policy on travel. Cycling & walking are cheaper and can improve the well-being of your team. May also save fighting over expensive parking spots.

A big longer-term question – do you really need to allow business flights in your business? Are there other ways to achieve similar results? This might mean changing the type of clients or business model or finding local partners to deliver.

Team – Do your team have concerns about climate change and its impact on their lifestyles & the business? Climate anxiety is real and having open conversations about positive actions to tackle their concerns may help.

My recommendation is to put the whole team through Carbon literacy training and then listen to their ideas. The transition is likely to have a profound effect on businesses and education must form part of this.

Waste – How can you reduce the waste the business produces every year (whether in the form of carbon or in a landfill)? Consider switching to refillable products, banning single-use plastics, stopping marketing giveaways, SIM-only phones and refurbishing IT.

Can you redesign your product to produce less or more useable waste? What can you do to extend the life of your product? Can you make your service less harmful by changing the way it’s delivered?

Physical risks - What effect will floods or 7 * 40C days have on your business or employees? What can you do to minimise those risks?

Supply chain vulnerability – What risks could climate change have on your supply chain through delays or price rises? What can you do to reduce the risks?

Transition risk – Is there legislation on its way that might mean change is coming to your industry?

Walk the walk – Use what you have done at home & in the business as examples, and talk to your clients about what you found easy and harder. Let them see the results. Don’t underestimate the power of brown toilet paper (bamboo, not the other sort!)  to start a conversation. Equally, think about the subtle signals that suggest you are not committed to the changes (think banking & the flashy cars in the car park)

Client Review – What do your clients do with your service/good? What is their impact on the planet & its people? This is a harder one but do you need to rethink working with some of your clients or do you need to engage with them to reduce their impact?

We are all learning and evolving in a rapidly changing environment. I encourage you to share your progress (successes and failures) and help us all learn faster.

Rebecca, I was wondering if you might like to feature on the webinar sessions for Nextgen that Seb has also contributed too? One of the 4 episodes is very much focussed on how climate leadership benefits at professional level and I am asking a couple of people from other professions to have a little guest spot.

The B Corp statement of interdependence includes "That we must be the change we seek in the world". We can't rely on the politicians to lead, it's for business to lead now and business needs climate conscious accountants to support them. 🤗 My gateway drug was pensions, but now I am hooked on climate action.

I've already ticked a few of these off Rebecca, but you've given me a couple of new ideas to work on. Thank you!
