Stop Feeling Like an Unmade Bed

Stop Feeling Like an Unmade Bed

Good Morning!

Have you ever wondered how some women just inherently have great style? While there are those small few that organically know how to put it all together, for most of us we have to make the conscious decision to learn how to do it ourselves. It is not organic for us. This is how my own fashion/style story began because I decided to do something about it. I just never felt like I had myself all pulled together.

Very early in my fashion retail career I had a coworker who always showed up perfect. Perfectly dressed, perfectly coiffed, perfect make-up...always crisp and put together. She was the epitome of perfect. And next to her I always felt like an "unmade bed." So I began to pay attention to how she put herself together…her clothes were always crisply pressed. She always wore a belt to ensure that her outfit was "finished" and it was always bucked in the middle hole. Her shoes were always unscuffed, the heel taps intact, her pants were always hemmed to the correct length and never dragged the floor. And what I started to realize was those little details added up and made a big difference in her overall appearance. And I followed suit. I began to pay attention to the details. And when I did, magically I began to feel less and less like that "unmade bed" and more and more put tougher.

So the moral of this story is that DETAILS MATTER. Check your clothing for rips, tears and stains. Crisply iron your outfit if it needs it. Take your shoes to the shoe repair for some love (this will also help them last longer too). A belt fits when you can buckle it in the middle hole and always wear a belt if your pants have belt loops...it "finishes" your outfit. Schedule regular hair appointments and if you don't want to spend the time/money on regular manicures and pedicures, learn to do them yourself. Go to the makeup counter for makeup advice. Because all of these little details add up. DETAILS MATTER!

Pro Tip: don't forget to clean out your handbag at least once a week. Throw out old receipts, trash, etc. Use leather treatment on it if it is leather, give it a good brushing if it is suede. An overstuffed, unkempt handbag is an easily overlooked detail.

Bonus Pro Tip: Feeling like an "unmade bed" can also manifest itself in other areas of your life...your self-esteem and confidence takes the hit and it can effect your mood, your productivity, your performance, etc. So taking ownership of how you present yourself to the world can postively impact all areas of your life
