🇮🇳 Stories of Independence and Partition 🇮🇳
Dear reader,
As we approach the 75th Independence Day of India, we take the opportunity to reflect on a number of pieces from our archives giving nuggets of information on colonial rule, the national movement, the Partition and the experience of the making of an independent India.
To start with, our four-part series from 2017 put together eight divergent experiences of August 15, 1947- a UP Muslim and two Pakistan born Hindus, a Dhaka Hindu and a Kolkata Muslim, a resident of Portuguese Goa and one from British Malabar, and finally a Kashmiri Pandit and one belonging to the princely state of Jodhpur.
Avina Kohli’s personal account of how she traced back her grandparents’ pre-partition house in Sialkot is both deeply emotional and at the same time brings out much about the history of evacuee properties in the years following the Partition.
Our research story from last year narrates how the multiple communities coexisting in Bombay came together to give the nationalist movement a unique colour. This other story from 2017, digs into newspaper archives and brings out an analysis of how some of the biggest dailies across the world reported on India’s Independence.
