This week, I’m highlighting one of my favorite summer reds: Pinot Noir. This wine is a fantastic summer red wine, offering light, refreshing flavors that stand up to warm weather and complement a wide variety of foods.

Originating from the Burgundy region of France, it’s now grown worldwide, including in regions like California, Oregon, and New Zealand. This grape is notoriously difficult to grow, requiring a cool climate and meticulous care, but the results are well worth the effort.

Pinot Noir is celebrated for its complex yet delicate flavors.

  • When it comes to Aromas: Expect aromas of red berries like cherry, raspberry, and strawberry, often accompanied by earthy notes such as mushroom and forest floor.
  • On the palate: Pinot Noir is light to medium-bodied with bright acidity. Flavors of fresh red fruit dominate, often layered with hints of spice, and  herbs.

Pinot Noir's light body and high acidity make it a refreshing choice for warm weather.

Here’s why it stands out as a summer red:

  • Chillable: Unlike heavier reds, Pinot Noir can be slightly chilled (around 55°F) without losing its character. This makes it a cool and refreshing option on hot days.
  • Food Pairing: Pinot Noir pairs beautifully with a range of summer dishes, from grilled salmon and chicken to lighter fare like salads and charcuterie boards. Its acidity cuts through rich foods, making it a great companion to barbecue as well.

Summer tips

To fully enjoy Pinot Noir this summer, keep these serving tips in mind:

  • Chill Slightly: As mentioned, serve Pinot Noir slightly chilled. Pop it in the fridge for about 20-30 minutes before serving to reach the perfect temperature.
  • Glassware: Use a large-bowl glass to allow the wine to breathe and to fully capture its aromas and flavors.
  • Storage: If you’re taking it outdoors, consider an insulated wine bag to keep it cool and at its best.

So, as you relish the warm days ahead, let Pinot Noir be your go-to summer red, elevating your dining experiences and outdoor gatherings.

Cheers to enjoying summer with the perfect glass of wine!
