SUSTAIN - ABILITY
SUSTAIN-ABILITY
The term ‘sustainability’ is widely used today - but are we truly acknowledging what it stands for?
The principles of sustainability refer to the three core concepts of environmental, social, and economic sustainability – sometimes broken down as “People, Planet, & Profits.”
This means that to be considered sustainable, a business must be able to conserve natural resources, support a healthy community and workforce, and earn enough revenue to remain financially viable for the long-term.
Of course, a company needs to stay profitable, and ambition is heralded as success throughout business; but at what cost does this ambition come at? If our ambition blinds us to the negative consequences of putting profit margin over our planet, we must re-evaluate what is really important to us.
If the price of progress is sacrificing the world around us, we are in fact regressing.
The built environment faces significant challenges to remain sustainable across the three core pillars of “People, Planet, & Profits” – buildings and construction are responsible for 39% of greenhouse gas emissions, globally.
Efficient and affordable methods of construction must continue at pace, to keep up with the growing demand for housing across the UK - so what can we do?
LOFT believe we must become regenerative by design – ensuring that when we are dealing with any scale of products, services, waste, etc. it becomes part of a circular economy. We must work collectively to share knowledge, inspire, and energise sustainability measures across the sector. It’s easy to verbally explain our proposed Environmental or Social commitments - the big question today revolves around Governance – ESG.
A sustainable built environment is designed for longevity, flexibility, adaptability, assembly, disassembly, reuse, and recoverability, considering future climate risks. It uses low- carbon, low-impact, non-toxic materials, and it recovers used resources (materials and products on- site or from other sites). It is powered by renewable energy, ensures sustainable water consumption, and enhances the wellbeing and safety of people. Green spaces, natural biodiversity and nature- based solutions increase resilience, wellbeing, and social connectivity. It prioritises sustainable and shared mobility.
At LOFT we are doing everything within our control to drive sustainability in our daily practise, enforcing stricter recycling policies, up-cycling furniture, developing a fully sustainable range of products alongside our sustainably conscious service offerings.
Our aim for the "Build To Regenerate" series, is to unite the industry and create a journal that can be utilised by the leading innovators and through-leaders across every corner of the property sector.
We must work collectively to share information, welcome modern practices, and communicate openly to achieve a cleaner industry for all and a healthier planet for generations to come – we all have the ability to consciously sustain what we use, and we must actively choose to do so today.
