Tampering with an electric meter. Is it worth it?
Sign of the times. Tempering electrical meters

Tampering with an electric meter. Is it worth it?

Recently, we had the opportunity to attend a property where the landlord had raised concerns about a sudden and significant increase in utility bills. Suspecting tampering with the electricity meter, an investigation was conducted, leading to a surprising discovery. It was found that the tenant had ingeniously used a link cable to bypass their own meter and tap directly into the landlord's #electricity supply.

The audacity of this act not only raises eyebrows but also highlights the potential dangers associated with such actions. By tampering with the electricity meter, the tenant not only risks a short circuit but also the possibility of wiring overheating or even a fire. The consequences of these hazards are not to be taken lightly, as they could lead to severe damage to property or, even worse, threaten lives. There is a genuine risk of fatal electric shocks when live wiring is exposed due to tampering.

In light of these alarming findings, it is crucial to take immediate action if you suspect someone of tampering with your meter. Reporting such incidents to the appropriate authorities is vital. One option available is to contact Crime Stoppers Stay Energy Safe, a 24-hour helpline that offers assistance in such matters. By doing so, you not only contribute to the safety of your property but also help protect others from potential risks.

Tampering with electricity meters is considered a criminal offence under the Elements, specifically sections 13 TA 1968. Those found guilty of this offence could face fines of at least £2000 or more. Moreover, in cases where the matter is deemed more serious, offenders may face even more severe penalties, such as substantial fines and prison sentences of up to five years. However, it is worth mentioning that the availability of prison space is a valid concern in some courts.

In conclusion, the discovery of a tenant tampering with the electricity meter at the aforementioned property sheds light on the potential dangers and consequences associated with such actions. To ensure the well-being and safety of both occupants and property, it is important to promptly report any suspicion of meter tampering to the appropriate authorities. By doing so, we contribute to creating a safer environment for everyone while discouraging illegal activities in the realm of utility consumption #metertampering #electrician
