A Team is as Strong as its Weakest Link

A supply chain is a network that includes a company and the resources, technology, suppliers, and individuals it uses in order to produce their final product. The supply chain is a series of steps necessary to turn raw material into a finished product or service. Supply chains are helpful in the reduction of costs and in remaining competitive among other companies.

Supply chain attacks are common and effective because if one link breaks down, the rest of the chain and company can be affected. Many intruders will attack through an unexpected, less secure element in the supply chain in order to get what they want from a different step in the chain, such as the final service. A large risk with supply chain attacks is due to information sharing with suppliers. For example, in 2013, Target, a US retailer, was breached and around 40 million customers credit and debit cards were vulnerable to fraud since the system was hacked into. After the attack, Target received approximately 90 lawsuits from customers for carelessness and compensatory damages. Target spent $61 million in response to this crisis.

Just like in the case of Target, any supply chain could be breached through its weakest link. Often times, companies have firewalls or other protective measures but do not realize that they are not strong enough and do not realize the potential risks they may be facing. Preventing against breaches in the supply chain requires professional assistance. The supply chain should be reviewed by cybersecurity experts. Integrity Consulting & Risk Management is one such company that could provide the necessary services.
