Tech for today: D(r)ive in with us

In this edition of Audi Monthly: read about artificial intelligence (AI) at Audi from Andreas Kühne , Program Manager in production and logistics, find out how the teams we sponsor got on at Formula Student, and what the result of our newest ESG rating was. Also included are details on the innovative sunroof of the all-electric Audi A6 e-tron and a first look at the upcoming Audi Q5. Let’s get into it!

Andreas Kühne is Program Manager in production and logistics at Audi. In this exclusive interview he reveals the state of AI at the four rings.

1. Andreas, why is AI important to Audi?

We need AI to assure our long-term competitiveness, for instance by making our processes more efficient. AI technologies enable us for example to reduce the amount of energy we use while also preventing errors. These solutions for production and quality control allow our employees to focus on value-adding activities.

At the same time, I want to stress that our goal is not to replace anybody’s job with AI. We understand this is a concern for employees nevertheless and are taking this seriously. AI at Audi will support our employees – for example by simplifying tedious and repetitive tasks.

And, of course, we need people who develop and monitor the data pipeline or AI software. Overall, there will be new activities and opportunities, both for the company and for employees.

2. Which AI technologies is Audi already deploying today?

One of the areas we are focusing on is using AI to monitor production processes and quality. A current addition here is IRIS, the Intelligent Recognition and Inspection System. It uses cameras to check labels applied to various areas of the vehicle during production. For example, those explaining where and how to mount a child seat. IRIS ensures they are applied to the correct part, and it also verifies their position, content, orientation, intactness, and application.

Besides IRIS, we are working on multiple other use cases, including for generative AI for which we see huge potential in production – for example in analyzing supply.

3. Since when has Audi been interested in AI?

AI is developing rapidly. It really has done so in the last ten to 15 years, with even more well documented breakthroughs coming recently. We have been creating AI applications for production since more than five years.

In other words, we did not decide to use AI overnight or recently. At the same time, we set ourselves the goal of fully exploiting the potential of data and AI to ensure competitiveness in production and optimize internal processes. We are currently collecting further use cases and have already identified more than 100 possibilities in production and logistics alone.

Launches upon launches and more to come

The world premiere of the Audi Q6 e-tron family in spring kicked off our biggest ever model initiative: In 2024 and 2025 alone, Audi will launch more than 20 new models – over ten of them are all-electric. As our CEO Gernot Döllner explains: “Over the coming years, we will expand our range of electric models step by step. At the same time, we will rejuvenate our portfolio of models with combustion engines. This will give us a robust and flexible position as we transition to an all-electric portfolio.”

Launched shortly before the all-electric and all-new Audi A6 e-tron series, the Audi A5 family has been another key milestone for us. “The new Audi A5 family represents the beginning of the next generation of combustion engines, which will be more efficient thanks to partially electric driving,” says Gernot Döllner.

What is more, the next model is already at the starting blocks: the Audi Q5. We only have one thing to add to that: stay tuned for the launch this fall!

Voluntary ESG rating: how is it going and why are we doing it?

Audi strives to make a valuable contribution to society and the environment. The goal is to minimize its impact on the environment and to ensure that its contribution to society is as positive as possible. In order to measure where we are at, we underwent a rating by ISS, an ESG rating agency, for the second time this year. The result: our rating has improved to B, putting us near the top of the 49 companies from the automotive sector ISS have evaluated. In fact, we are one of only two among these to achieve a B rating.

Audi CFO Jürgen Rittersberger explains our reason for undergoing the rating: “We are convinced that good sustainability performance and financial success go hand in hand in the long term. This interaction helps to make Audi fit for the future.”

Let there be light or shade – at the touch of a button

If you are sitting in the all-electric Audi A6 e-tron and wish to experience a new innovation from Audi, just look up!

Both the Sportback and Avant of our newest electric model feature an optional innovative panoramic glass roof with switchable transparency. In contrast to previous types of sun or moon roofs, the new smart glass minimizes direct sunlight and becomes opaque at the touch of a button thanks to PDLC technology (polymer-dispersed liquid crystal).

Electrically switchable glass components contain two PDLC film elements, with liquid crystals floating in between. If no voltage is applied, the crystals are unordered and thus appear opaque, making the glass roof translucent. If voltage is applied, the crystals align to make the roof transparent. The system can be controlled like a "digital curtain" via a button in the roof module, and customers are able to choose from four presets.
