Thinking inside the box to close the gender data gap in Women’s Health

Combining expertise across industries and united by a singular mission to drive meaningful change for women everywhere, Roche and XProject are jumpstarting a powerful collaboration with InCube and #RocheInnolab.

From 10 to 14 October 2022, in the solitude park Basel, Switzerland, an innovative challenge, sponsored by Roche’s Innolab and Procurement teams, ETH Zürich Microsoft and Siemens   –  amongst other leading companies – will see inventive students from leading universities worldwide spend more than one hundred hours inside a cube to solve innovation challenges of working “towards a connected future”.

One such challenge is the #NotSoFunFact that women in low- and middle-income countries are 18% less likely than men to own a smartphone.

This has profound implications on the increasing use of data and AI to diagnose, monitor and understand disease. With more and more smartphones collecting clinically relevant data, AI and machine learning programmes are basing assumptions on inherently skewed data sets. The fact that women have less access to smartphones means they will continue to be underrepresented in data, leading to sex biases in AI and healthcare, and are also less able to take ownership of their healthcare decisions.

Find out more about Roche's commitment to addressing inequities in women's health and visit XProject.
