Time to invest in our planet – #Earthday, 22 April 2022
When you’re taking on the top five polluters of the planet (the hall of shame: #1 energy, #2 travel/transportation, #3 agriculture, #4 fashion and #5 food retail), you need to be talking very loud. That’s why #Earthday exists. Founded in 1970 and growing exponentially every year, the #Earthday goal for 2022 is to reach over 1bn people and decision-makers (governments, institutions, businesses) all over the world.
It's an ambitious target but if you’re going to create a 21st century global economy that will redress the damage and safeguard a future for our planet, you’ve got to reach the people that can influence the businesses that line the pockets of those that currently profit from polluting the planet. Simple as that.
Fifty-two years is a long time in environmental activism. And what might have seemed pretty niche in 1970 (and unproven by science) is totally mainstream today. Even so, #Earthday started with a bang – mobilising 20m Americans to call for greater protections for our planet. But to reach today’s global economy the #Earthday movement now collaborates with more than 150,000 partners in 192 of the world’s 195 countries – so pretty much everywhere.
“As an individual, you wield real power" - EarthDay.org
In #Earthday’s vision, the need for transformational change ends with a rallying cry: “As an individual, you wield real power and influence as a consumer, a voter, and a member of a community that can unite for change. Don’t underestimate your power. When your voice and your actions are united with thousands or millions of others around the world, we create a movement that is inclusive, impactful, and impossible to ignore.”
This sounds super motivational, but while decades of action may have helped slow the destruction of our natural resources it can feel hard to see how.
Animal populations have plummeted by 68% since 1970, directly as a result of human overconsumption and intensive agriculture – all linked with the size of our global population. In the USA intensive farming has decimated the natural grasslands – the prairies – destruction on a par with deforestation in the Brazilian Cerrado – and similarly intertwined with carbon emissions – known to release even greater levels from the soil as the grassland is ploughed.
According to Dr Nathalie Pettorelli of the Zoological Society of London, “The level of interconnectedness between the climate change and biodiversity crises is high and should not be underestimated. This is not just about climate change impacting biodiversity; it is also about the loss of biodiversity deepening the climate crisis.”
It’s unsurprising that people (and businesses driving for change) can feel powerless to do anything. In the UK, climate change is the third most important issue concerning adults (after their own physical and mental health). According to the Office for National Statistics, 75% of adults fear climate change, while a 2021 global survey of 10,000 students shows just under 60% of young people feel very or extremely worried about climate change, and 56% actually think humanity is doomed.
So, eco-anxiety is very much a thing – with 45% of teens and young adults feeling the stress on a daily basis, globally. With 11,000 weather-related disasters in the world attributed to climate change it’s hard to counter a level of anxiety that seems to be rooted in perfectly rational fear. Action is the only answer.
The #Earthday 2022 pledge is to “invest in our planet”. In the IPCC’s November 2021 report, UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres said “time is running out. Irreversible climate tipping points lie alarmingly close”. The time to act is now – and in many ways, we’re all very well placed. Consumers are keener than ever to do the right thing, but confused as to how that’s best achieved and, with so much greenwashing about, often doubt the claims companies make.
The #Earthday website is like a metaphor for the Climate Crisis. There is so much content – so many dramatic statistics and such overwhelming urgency that prioritising is really hard to do.
By the same token, businesses are under serious pressure to put their green words into actions, to walk the talk, yet it’s really hard to form a clear idea of one’s own footprint - and what each business and individual can do about it - what achievable but effective goals would look like for each. While #Earthday is a great time to focus on these issues, their website is like a metaphor for the Climate Crisis. There is so much content – so many dramatic statistics and such overwhelming urgency that prioritising is really hard to do.
Also, being global and aiming to engage with a billion people, the website and all the campaigning going on feels inclusive but not incisive. And that’s hardly surprising. At Cyd Connects we always say that taking action is simple but it’s never easy. That simple phrase is a perfect metaphor for navigating the scale of the climate challenge and working out how best to make the most effective start. If you have several hours to spare and your superpower is creating order out of amorphous content, we recommend you root through, summarise and share everything the #Earthday website has to offer. If, like most people, you prefer your intel a bit more bite-sized, here’s a few of our suggestions as to where to start.
PLASTIC PERIL
We all know it but let’s do something about it. With microplastics finally making their way into human organs and blood, not to mention the damage done in oceans – it needs to stop. It’s all obvious stuff but to keep plastics out of the sea, the ground and all of our fragile ecosystems, we need to stop using them. Food packaging is one of the worst offenders, so choose unpackaged. Stop buying bottled water - get a keepy cup for coffee and a water bottle (just the one) for refreshment on the go. If you’re making merch, choose the eco option - compostable cups, recycled/organic cotton tees/bags, etc. and get it produced locally to cut down on miles. It’s the tip of the iceberg, so check out the Plastics fact sheets on earthday.org.

Agriculture is responsible for between 13% and 18% of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions – largely nitrous oxide and methane, and mainly from cows. On top of that a single pound (453 grams) of beef requires 1,800 gallons of water to produce. Yet plant-based substitutes generate 90% less greenhouse gases, use 99% less water and have 93% less impact on land use. From serving plant-based foods in work environments to getting everybody into #veganuary, it’s an absolute no-brainer.
FASHION FORWARD
Fashion is the fourth single biggest emitter of carbon. We all know the drill. Keep fashion slow, sustainable, or pre-loved. Buy less, wear it more. Gift or sell stuff we’re done with – offload it at a clothes swap (at work, at home), or sell direct to a new owner. Research ethical brands and stick to them. If something seems too good to be true it usually is – so ask questions and find out who’s making your clothes. Money talks so don’t buy anything made with virgin synthetics (35% of ocean microplastics come from washing synthetic clothing). Check out the #Earthday fashion fact sheet, then sign the petition and share with your clients and customers.
CLEAN UP!
The Great Global Clean-up® is a hands-on, grassroots way to get involved in #Earthday – as a sponsor/partner or to promote to consumers, your customers or to a wider industry. As the name suggests, the clean-up “is a worldwide campaign to remove billions of pieces of trash from neighborhoods, beaches, rivers, lakes, trails, and parks — reducing waste and plastic pollution, improving habitats, and preventing harm to wildlife and humans”. Find an event near you (they’re all over the world), give staff time off to join in, or get involved as a business, partnering, or sponsoring.
BE A B-CORP
With their mission “Make Business a Force for Good”, B-Corporation certified businesses are “leaders in the global movement for an inclusive, equitable, and regenerative economy. Unlike other certifications for businesses, B-Corp is unique in its ability to measure a company’s entire social and environmental impact”. B-Corp certification is a great way for companies to look at themselves differently. To find potential where it might not have appeared to exist and to shift their business into the very best place it could be – from products to environments, culture to logistics. We think there’s no better way to start the journey every business needs to take to help save our planet.
DON’T ASK US
Ask our client, Pordrum Investments. A proprietary trading fund for over seven years, Pordrum were increasingly being asked about their sustainability goals and targets by clients but were struggling to answer with anything concrete. So, they came to us, and we offered them our Sustainability 101 package. We used the B-Corp framework to assess their business around five impact areas: Governance, Workers, Community, Environment and Customers, to evaluate their sustainability status, report back on where they stand and define their best next steps along a timeline.
“Cyd Connects were able to fully assess and evaluate where we stood as a business regarding our sustainability standards and, from that, develop a simple set of steps – a roadmap – to improve. We knew we wanted to do better on that front, but we didn’t really know how to go about it. From broader ambitions to granular detail – such as enabling us to educate our investors and the wider consumer on the environmental impact of investing in crypto currencies – Cyd Connects really brought it all to life – making it seem logical, possible, and necessary.” John Pordum, MD at Pordum Investments
To mark #Earthday 2022, we’re offering any business that wants it a 20-minute Sustainability 101 – to discuss their goals and any stumbling blocks before we plot a roadmap to get them closer to where they need to be.
We’re Cyd Connects - a sustainability consultancy on a mission to help businesses become a force for good. We know that if the world of business doesn’t change and we don’t see a global shift to invest in our planet for #Earthday, we will not reverse climate change in the short time we have to do it. As sustainability solutionists, we’re fully committed to changing the way businesses do business on #Earthday and every other day of the year - because considered change is the only way to save the planet and the human race.
