Patrick Quarcoo, as everyone knows him as PQ, is a Ghanaian Kenya-based serial entrepreneur whose impact on the media landscape in Kenya is nothing short of transformative. As the founder and CEO of Radio Africa Group, PQ has overseen the growth of a media empire that includes leading channels like KISS 100, Classic 105, Smooth FM, Radio Jambo, East FM, Gukena FM, the Star newspaper, and KISS TV. Arriving in Kenya from Reuters Uganda in the 90s, PQ's vision and leadership have been pivotal in shaping the country's media industry. After 25 years of trailblazing, PQ’s retirement marks the end of an era.

Did PQ hire the youngest presenter at Radio Africa Group!?

My journey with Radio Africa Group began in 2013 as a presenter at East FM. From the outset, PQ's leadership style stood out. He fostered an environment where creativity and self-expression were not just encouraged but celebrated. PQ's open-door policy was particularly impactful for me as a young, energetic 19-year-old navigating the media world. One memorable incident was when PQ bought a box of cupcakes from me during a fundraising campaign for Movember, a month dedicated to raising awareness for men's cancer. Just last month, I was fortunate enough to cut my Birthday cake with my boss PQ on the same day he announced his retirement. A bitter-sweet moment for me as I come full circle at Radio Africa Group.

Bringing Great Ideas to Life

Radio Africa Group achieved numerous milestones, this includes; An all new Radio Africa Events Team, A Digital online platform Mpasho.co.ke, Ticketing platform; Ticketyetu.com, BAMBA TV & Bamba Sports Studios, and most recently a new digital entertainment platform; Songplay.com!

PQ’s leadership and guidance were instrumental in my career, enabling me to excel at #EastFM and later at #BambaSports—a free-to-air sports channel he conceptualized. As a TV anchor and daily sports and news presenter at #BambaSports, I had the privilege of working with industry greats such as Carol Radul, Kieni Githinji, and Roy Karuhize. Together, we promoted Kenyan athletes, enriching the sports culture in the country, and hosted numerous sports events, including the "EUROs 2016," "Olympics," Coverage on English Premier League, and owning TV rights to air The Kenyan NSL LIVE! In addition to my passion for sports, I served as a daily news presenter, on-ground reporter, sports analyst, and media representative for Radio Africa. I also developed and hosted my own segment, "Sports Chat with Jamil Alibhai," a direct result of the opportunities PQ created for us.

His knack for connecting with his team and fostering a dynamic work environment led to continuous innovation and growth. He inspired us to push our boundaries and excel, both on air and as media personalities. PQ always said;

Bring solutions, not problems. I already have so many problems!

PQ's impact on the media industry extends far beyond the walls of Radio Africa Group. His vision has shaped the company's culture, driving it to become a leading media powerhouse in Kenya and the region. PQ gave young Kenyans from all walks of life a chance to be heard and related to, covering television, radio, digital platforms, gazetted papers, and the events space—a comprehensive 360-degree approach to media. This achievement is a testament to his innovative spirit and commitment to excellence. His contributions have elevated the standards of media practice, influencing how content is created and consumed. His legacy is one of innovation, dedication, and an unwavering commitment to excellence.

PQ, sir, you are not from here, and you didn't owe any of us anything, yet you dedicated 25 years to creating Kenya's most recognisable media house. You've nurtured talented personalities, including myself. Despite being a minority station, East FM never felt neglected or left out. PQ always encouraged us to challenge other stations, and we did! For 3-years-in-a-row, East FM was among the top 3 performing stations at Radio Africa Group (2013-2016).
