Top four ethical bird control techniques
Birds are inventive creatures, and when it comes to keeping them out of unwanted spaces, sometimes specialists need to get a little creative too. Some of the equipment used for bird deterrents and other measures are what you might expect, while others may come as a surprise….
Useful tools
One solution we use is a chimney cap. These are not just useful in keeping out birds, but also squirrels, bats, and other creatures. They can even be helpful in preventing fires, as they stop burning embers from floating out of the chimney onto the roof or into gardens. The product basically works as you’d imagine, blocking off access to the chute.
A similar system can be put in place when birds make their home under solar panels. These nests can damage the panels’ cabling and wiring, and bird feces can corrode essential elements. We offer specially designed pigeon-proofing for solar panels, in the form of tailored mesh. Find out more about these systems here.
Keep it natural
For more complex and difficult to shift bird problems, we have highly trained Bird Handlers and Birds of Prey who can come to an area on a weekly basis. This technique, known as hawking, also relies on the birds’ capacity to learn—this time teaching them that their predators are in the area, and therefore that they should move out. Hawking is popular with large hotels, museums and monuments.
Hi-tech
For locations where birds frequently rest, we offer bird spikes, which can be fitted to most outside surfaces, preventing problems associated with birds landing on ledges and leaving unsightly, hazardous droppings. We also offer a Bird Spiders Deterrent, a spider-like structure of wires, which rotates and sways when the birds land on it, making them feel unstable, making the site much less attractive as a roosting point. You can see a photo of this structure.
Enviromentokil [Our Promise]
Each one of these solutions can be tailored to the habitat in which they function, and the bird species in question. There’s no need to put off dealing with a troublesome bird problem for fear that the only solution will be extermination; at Rentokil, we take our responsibility to our environment very seriously and apply humane solutions wherever possible.
