One of the most remarkable traits of Dr. Kaufmann is his unwavering passion for education. Holding a B.A. in Communications and Government, an MS in Marketing, an MBA in Management, and a Research Doctorate of Business Administration Marketing, he demonstrates an extensive academic background. However, his dedication to education doesn't end with personal accomplishments; Dr. Kaufmann extends his knowledge to others as a respected adjunct professor at Kean University and Loyola University New Orleans , where he teaches strategic and sports marketing. This impressive blend of academics and teaching experience naturally led me to wonder how it has influenced his approach to sports marketing and management.
Dr. Kaufmann discussed the significance of incorporating real-world applications into his teaching methodology. He believes equipping students with practical experiences helps them better understand and apply the principles of sports marketing and management in the sports industry. By offering students opportunities to work on real-world projects, Dr. Kaufmann enables them to gain valuable hands-on experience and develop a deeper understanding of industry challenges and best practices.
“One aspect I try to incorporate into my teaching is not only from sports marketing but from general marketing and management. I try to create real-world applications for them. The area I focus on is anything that you’re learning, how do you apply this to the real world? You need to have that real-life experience."
Moving beyond his academic and teaching accomplishments, I was curious to learn about any successful partnerships that Dr. Kaufmann had worked on and the strategies he employed to secure them. He illuminated his experience in forging various partnerships, specifically when he was the Director of Corporate Partnerships with the New York Jets . He mentioned one particularly noteworthy collaboration with Idemia and TSA Pre-Check. This partnership led to the creation of a biometrics fast pass lane, enabling fans to enter MetLife Stadium at Jets games more safely and quickly. This project highlights Dr. Kaufmann's ability to recognize unique opportunities and develop inventive solutions to enhance the fan experience.
Furthermore, Dr. Kaufmann has successfully established educational partnerships with esteemed institutions such as New York University, Centenary University, Florida Tech University, and Kean University. He credits his success in securing these partnerships to his innate curiosity, inquisitive nature, and dedication to understanding the goals, initiatives, and competitive landscape of potential partners.
“The strategies I used to secure this partnership and others are by being naturally curious and asking questions. You have to learn about their business, the industry, external environments, and their goals, initiatives, etc; do a breakdown of how a sports project can help accomplish their goals.”
As the Director, Global Partnership Sales and Strategy for the New Orleans Saints and New Orleans Pelicans, Dr. Kaufmann faces the unique challenge of managing two distinct sports teams simultaneously. The question arises: does he have separate teams for each sport? Dr. Kaufmann clarifies that his global partnerships team operates seamlessly across both sports, unifying their efforts to drive success for the Saints and Pelicans alike. He reveals that the key to maintaining this delicate balance lies in a potent combination of time management, strategic focus, and unwavering commitment.
Dr. Kaufmann elaborated on the intricacies of managing two sports teams, highlighting the importance of allocating equal attention to both entities. As he delves deeper into the subject, he reveals the busiest time of the year for him is between October and December when both teams are active. He discusses that this requires heightened levels of focus and multitasking. To excel in this demanding environment, he emphasizes the importance of managing multiple projects and functions while relentlessly pursuing excellence in both the NFL and NBA.
“You have to make sure both properties are doing well, and it’s literally 50/50. They’re two totally different products, fan bases, and in different time periods, so we have to make sure the Saints are accomplishing goals as well as the Pelicans.”

In our intriguing conversation, Dr. Kaufmann dove into his unique approach to handling stress and maintaining focus amidst high-pressure situations, a topic that resonates with many professionals in and outside the sports industry. He emphasized the power of presence – truly inhabiting the moment without any distractions. Dr. Kaufmann underscored the importance of focusing on a single task or conversation at a time, a strategy that aids in clarity and fosters effective decision-making. Beyond this, Dr. Kaufmann places a high value on the people he works with. He stressed the significance of creating a conducive and nurturing culture, where everyone feels valued and motivated. This not only improves the overall work environment but also bolsters individual performance and productivity.
Moreover, he highlighted the indispensable role of good project management skills. By managing tasks effectively and prioritizing appropriately, he explained, one can tackle multiple responsibilities without getting overwhelmed. Dr. Kaufmann's insights serve as a powerful reminder of how we can navigate high-pressure situations and keep stress at bay, both in our personal and professional lives. These are words to reflect upon, and strategies to implement, as we each strive for excellence in our respective fields.
“Whenever I’m working on something or talking with someone, I don’t have my phone around me. So that’s one of my things; being present one conversation at a time, one goal at a time, and just really focusing on the task at hand.”
In the last question of our conversation, I asked Dr. Kaufmann to share valuable insights about the intersection of sports marketing and being a professional sports agent, a dream job that I am currently pursuing. One topic that stood out was how sports agents can enhance their clients' brand exposure and marketability. According to Dr. Kaufmann, sports agents should start with a solid foundation in business basics, particularly in accounting and finance. This knowledge equips agents to make savvy decisions and create synergistic collaborations with marketing professionals.
Furthermore, Dr. Kaufmann highlighted the crucial role of relationship building, fostering leadership, mentorship, and developing people. These factors, he explained, are paramount in the sports industry and can significantly impact a client's brand visibility and marketability. This blend of business acumen, sports marketing insights, and authentic relationship building, Dr. Kaufmann suggests, can be a game-changer for any professional navigating the sports industry.
