Trim the Door Standards Set

The next set of our Hardware Highlights grouping is called Trim the Door and consists of the following BHMA Standards:

ANSI/BHMA A156.6 - Architectural Door Trim

ANSI/BHMA A156.9 - Cabinet Hardware

ANSI/BHMA A156.11 - Cabinet Locks

ANSI/BHMA A156.16 - Auxiliary Hardware

ANSI/BHMA A156.21 - Thresholds

ANSI/BHMA A156.22 - Gasketing

Overview:

These standards are grouped together under the “Trim the Door” set which includes the products that are added to complete a doorway (besides locks, latches, and controls). Just like any BHMA standards, the primary users include manufacturers, specifiers, building owners, homeowners, architects, consumers, laboratories, etc. All of these users can access the BHMA Certified® Products Directory to find certified products that meet the ANSI/BHMA standards.

The standards in this set play a significant role, as they are needed in order to completely define the products enclosed in them to guarantee they do their intended functions. A few of these functions, for instance with Gasketing and Thresholds, play a role in water and air infiltration, and so these systems are installed where that may be a factor. Both of these standards can also play an important role in energy conservation and green building.

History:

The standards in this set have been around for more than three decades. Many BHMA Standards were originally compiled by the US Department of Commerce, then transferred to BHMA under a program to place control and then updated to the private sector. BHMA became an ANSI accredited Standards Developer Organization in 1983 adding “ANSI” to their title. The below breakdown illustrates the latest editions of these standards.
