UK's EV Charging Infrastructure to Double This Year with £6bn Investment as ChargeUK Launches as New Trade Association

The UK’s electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure is set to double in size this year, as part of a £6 billion investment unveiled by ChargeUK, the new trade association for the UK’s EV charging industry.

ChargeUK combines 18 of the largest companies installing the charge points needed to enable the UK’s transition to net zero. The members of ChargeUK will install tens of thousands of new chargers this year, with the aim of doubling the size of the nation’s EV charging network by 2023.

ChargeUK will work collaboratively with the government and other stakeholders to break down barriers and shape policies and regulations needed to enable the EV transition.

The move further cements collaboration as the cornerstone of a successful transition. Combining the abilities and expertise of the UK’s leading EV charging companies, and the weight of the UK Government, allows these sustainability leaders to enact the infrastructural changes that are so vital to the future prospects of our green economy.

Ian Johnston, Chair of ChargeUK and CEO of Osprey Charging Network , said, “Together we are investing billions of pounds to get more charge points in the ground right across the country.

These numbers reinforce our commitment to the UK’s Net Zero future. We will continue to be a proactive partner to the Government as we deliver a world-class charging infrastructure, giving the nation’s drivers the confidence to transition to electric vehicles.”

Transport decarbonisation and technology minister Jesse Norman  said, “The launch of ChargeUK shows how industry working together, alongside the Government, can release private investment, improve delivery, raise standards and promote the use of electric vehicle charging infrastructure for drivers across the country.”

The founding members of ChargeUK include Be.EV, Believ, bp pulse, char.gy, ChargePoint, Connected Kerb, ESB, Equans, evyve, Fastned, GRIDSERVE, IONITY, Mer, Osprey, Pod Point, PoGo Charge, Shell Recharge, and RAW Charging.

The inaugural AGM of ChargeUK will take place at the Fully Charged Live event at Farnborough International Exhibition and Conference Centre today (28th April).
