Under the Hood: Alexah

Under the Hood: Alexah

We launched our super app's car insurance compare-and-buy service in 2019 and were staffing up significantly when the pandemic made work from home our reality for the foreseeable future. Many of us stumbled through our first Zoom calls and technology hiccups as we adjusted to WFH life. But some people thrived. Today's Under the Hood features @Alexah Grinnel from the Jerry Buffalo office. Alexah is one of our colleagues who thrived. Here's more about Alexah, sales team lead.

What do you do at Jerry?

I lead our sales team in Buffalo, NY, which means I manage the people helping customers find the best and lowest priced car insurance policy that fits their needs.

What are some of your daily tasks?

No day is ever the same but, on any given day I could be: onboarding and training our new sales agents, which includes looking for ways we can help them achieve personal and career goals; supporting our management team and aiding in decision making that impacts our customers and employees; organizing the sales department functions to ensure initiatives are prioritized appropriately and tasks are quickly completed; and, (this is the best part) helping customers with any challenges and ensuring they find the right policy, at the right price and in the shortest possible amount of time.

Why did you join Jerry?

I was looking for a career at a company I’d be able to grow with and Jerry certainly checked all those boxes. I’m an insurance nerd. I got really excited about how easy it is to shop for insurance through an app using AI. The days of manually filling out insurance applications are gone! I'm proud to say that I've been here for two years and the culture we've been able to build is unmatched. Each day is as exciting as the next and our performance only continues to improve. I’m growing my experience while meaningfully impacting the growth of the company.

Everyone says you were the first to master working from home. What are your tips?

When we shifted to working from home in March 2020, I had to quickly evolve my habits. And now that we are permanently offering a hybrid working environment where we will work from home at least a few days a week, I’m glad I did! My top tips for our new hires that are not accustomed to remote working are:

  • Set up a comfortable work space ー whatever that is for you!
  • Be ready to go at the start of your work day. Show up at the same time everyday, much as you would do in an office environment.
  • Take breaks. Just because you're at home doesn't mean you don't need a breather. Stepping away helps clear your mind and improve focus.
  • Make a concerted effort to build relationships with your colleagues outside of work talk. This helps you connect and problem solve.

Where would your ideal road trip take you?

In my free time you'll either find me exploring the outdoors or relaxing near the water so my ideal road trip would take me through winding mountain roads with a beach destination.
