Universal Music Group is one of the hugest company of the music Industry. It has about fifty label at his disposal of various kind of music starting by pop, but also rap, country or classic. UMG have 79 label into 43 country over the world, it allow it to tailor its approach to different markets and not depend on only one kind of music.

“Its labels complement each other by focusing on different genres and segments, thus minimizing the effect of changing consumer tastes.” (Vivendi 2010)

UMG have all the function of the music, starting from the recording by way of publishing but also merchandising and Partnerships. Which allow it to control all the step of development for the creation of album and all the universe of each artist.

Another Universal Music Group force is responsible for the distribution and sales of the majority of labels.

The music license is one of the major revenue source, with 14.3% of the revenue. With the acquisition of the catalogues of Stiff Records and ZTT Records, UMG become the company with the largest music license.

For the artist and the public, UMG is a mark of excellence, first of all because when an artist enter into a label of UMG, it offer to him a notoriety and a budget sufficiently important to explode to the general public.

UMG has been able to take the digital turn very well, with partnership with streaming like Spotify or Deezer to name but a few. But also with the utilization of data to adapt the production of the music in function what kind of music is prefer by the public.

UMG understand connection between the artist and the public became one of the most important element of the artist’s communication. The artist has to be connect on social media often, and take care of his e-reputation. What I like at Universal Music Group is them plurality of label, they created and merged with a lot label in order to create a maximum of content which is adapt to largest public. More and more recently, lot of artist create they own label under the publishing of Universal for the purpose of get the accompaniment and network.    

I could reproach the music creation is kind curb, in fact the label insist to reach the largest public. The authenticity of the artist is kind of model to what attend the public. The accumulation of data increase that, because as I said, the label known exactly what music is prefer by the public, so it’s restrain the creation of the artist.
