Unlocking the Puzzle: Navigating the Deceptive World of "Free" Software

Picture this familiar scenario: you stumble upon a promising tool, labeled as "free," only to discover that its functionality is a mere teaser, teasing you into a labyrinth of limited features and persistent prompts for payment.

This misleading dance between the allure of free access and the reality of restricted capabilities has become an exasperating pain point for users seeking cost-effective solutions.

The time invested in exploring seemingly liberating software often ends with a disillusioning roadblock, demanding a financial commitment for the functionality you thought was freely yours.

If you are feeling the pain, then this article will help to dispel some of the confusion around this topic at the end of it all I will share some of my favorite “freemium” platforms.

 The difference between Free Software, Open Source, and Freemium

Definition: "Free" in this context refers to freedom, not necessarily price. The Free Software Foundation (FSF) defines free software as software that gives users the freedom to run, modify, and distribute the software.

Key Characteristics:

Freedom to run the program for any purpose.

Freedom to study and modify the program's source code.

Freedom to distribute modified versions of the program.

The emphasis is on user freedoms and ethical considerations.

Example License: GNU General Public License (GPL).

Open-Source Software:

Definition: Open-source software refers to software whose source code is freely available for the public to view, modify, and distribute. The focus is on the practical benefits of collaboration and transparency rather than strict adherence to user freedoms.

Key Characteristics:

Source code is accessible to everyone.

Encourages collaboration and community involvement.

May or may not include specific freedoms for users (as in free software).

The emphasis is on the practical advantages of open development.

Example License: MIT License, Apache License.

Freemium Software:

Free Access to Basic Features: Freemium platforms offer a free version that includes essential functionalities, allowing users to use the service without immediate financial commitment.

Key Characteristics:

Option to Upgrade for Premium Features: Users have the choice to upgrade to a premium version by paying for additional features, advanced tools, or an ad-free experience.

Showcasing Value: The free version serves as a showcase of the platform's value, enticing users to explore and experience its capabilities.

Flexibility for Users: This model provides flexibility for users to assess the platform's suitability for their needs before deciding to invest in premium features.

Wider User Base: By offering a free version, freemium platforms attract a larger user base, potentially converting free users into paying customers over time.

Business Sustainability: The combination of free and premium offerings contributes to the sustainability of the platform by generating revenue from users who opt for premium features.

So, let’s talk about some of the “freemium” platforms that I believe have truly struck the balance between Free and Premium! These will be especially useful for content creators of all stripes.

As with all “free” platforms these are among some of the ones that I use, they all have premium versions but these work quite well without the upgrades!

GIMP is an acronym for GNU Image Manipulation Program. It is a freely distributed program for such tasks as photo retouching, image composition and image authoring. It has many capabilities very much like Photoshop.

INKSCAPE  A vector graphics editor for GNU/Linux, Windows and macOS. It offers a rich set of features and is widely used for both artistic and technical illustrations such as cartoons, clip art, logos, typography, diagramming, and flowcharting. It uses vector graphics to allow for sharp printouts and renderings at unlimited resolution and is not bound to a fixed number of pixels like raster graphics. Inkscape uses the standardized SVG file format as its main format, which is supported by many other applications including web browsers.  

DAVINCI RESOLVE - DaVinci Resolve is the world’s only solution that combines editing, color correction, visual effects, motion graphics and audio postproduction all in one software tool! Its elegant, modern interface is fast to learn and easy for new users, yet powerful for professionals.

CAPCUT -  Cap Cut offers easy-to-use video editing functions, free in-app fonts and effects, free advanced features such as keyframe animation, smooth slow-motion, chroma key, and stabilization, to help you capture and snip moments.

LIBREOFFICE  - LibreOffice includes several applications that make it the most versatile Free and Open Source office suite on the market: Writer (word processing), Calc (spreadsheets), Impress (presentations), Draw (vector graphics and flowcharts), Base (databases), and Math (formula editing).
