There is an unprecedented levels of Mining Jobs! How do you navigate through all of the job opportunities?

As a mining professional you will be currently inundated by calls from agency and internal recruiters wanting to tell you about their exciting job opportunities and no surprise with the extreme candidate shortages that Western Australia is experiencing across all industries. Strong, stable commodity prices have allowed for increases in mine production, new mine start-ups and booming exploration programmes. In a normal world these facts alone would result in candidate shortages but add to this an explosion in national construction projects and internal and international border closures we have a perfect storm for high job vacancies and low candidate availability. After attending Diggers and Dealers and the BDO Mining and Metals conference last month I wanted to check the statistics to see if it was as extreme as we are all saying and yes, it is! The Australian Bureau of Statistics website shows that in May there were 46,200 job vacancies across WA and the unemployment rate is at 4.9% the lowest for seven years. The demand for candidates covers all levels across technical roles and blue collar trade and operators; Engineers, Geologists, HD Fitters, Electricians, Drillers and Mobile Plant Operators.

For mining candidates this has created a real opportunity for you to find your perfect job with a great salary, but with so many opportunities how do you differentiate between the perfect and average when recruiters are selling the job to you? How do you keep track of your multiple job applications? And how do you know it is a good career opportunity on offer?

That's where my colleagues and I, the Hays WA Mining team can assist you by helping you work through the job opportunities and essentially project manage your job applications for you. At Hays our purpose is to be a lifelong career partner to our candidates supporting you through all stages of your career.

All stages of the mine lifecycle whether it be exploration, feasibility, design, construction or operations you have a project team to support each stage. Make your job search a project and have a dedicated Hays mining recruiter be your project manager.

  • Your first step with Hays would be to arrange a meeting so that your expert recruiter can fully understand your experience, aspirations, and the requirements of your next role. It is always crucial for candidates to meet their recruiter so that you know that you have rapport and trust in the person that is representing you to your new employer.
  • Once we know your career story, we then discuss our current live jobs with you, if they are not right then we will proactively, and more importantly confidentially, create opportunities for you through our extensive client network.
  • Your Hays recruiter will seek and track all feedback for you, so you only need one point of contact throughout your job search.
  • Once you are at interview stage we will give you professional interview advice and because we understand the importance of knowing everything about the job you can rest assure through our best endeavours that we not only know the job description, but we are knowledgeable about the company, your potential new manager and the team culture so that you are always making the most informed decision rather than applying to a job advertisement (which generally and unfortunately only tells you what the company wants).
  • All of this means that your job search will be much more successful and when you are at the job offer stage, we will ensure that the best offer is negotiated for you.
  • At job commencement stage and during your first three months of employment we will remain in contact with you to ensure that those initial months run smoothly
