Vegans Vs Meat Eaters!

Vegans Vs Meat Eaters!

Awards in medicine are just byproducts of doing the right things, but it is only possible because of the amazing teams that we have behind us. Although the doctor is often the one recognized, it’s the unsung heroes who work diligently behind the scenes, including the physician extenders, nurses, office workers, and hospital support staff who make it all happen.

And while recognition is great, it’s the work itself that is important, which is why I’m deeply honored to again be recognized by my peers as a 2024 Top Doctor in both Minnesota Monthly & Mpls. St. Paul Magazine!

While I’m incredibly grateful to be acknowledged for the effort required, the reward is really being able to help people every day who are struggling, so they can get on living their lives with their loved ones. It’s truly my mission in life and what I feel a calling to do.

Winning awards is not the goal but rather helping the patients get the care they need and deserve in this very challenging environment. Since joining Midwest Spine & Brain Institute 18 years ago, I’ve been privileged to serve the amazing Twin Cities community, and I am proud to be not just a surgeon but an advocate for the healthcare system and for helping people towards a more holistic approach to their wellbeing. There is so much work to be done to transform healthcare and I am so thankful for the incredible support from my colleagues, the medical community, and most importantly the patients.

The Fierce Debate Between Vegans Vs Meat Eaters

Recently, I sparked an engaging online debate between two extremely passionate camps—the vegan crowd vs the carnivore crowd. As someone deeply involved in health and wellness, I’ve seen firsthand how strongly people feel about their dietary choices. Both sides presented compelling arguments for their side: vegans emphasize the undeniable benefits of phytonutrients and plant-based eating for reducing cancer risk, while meat eaters highlight the advantages of protein-rich diets, especially for maintaining muscle mass and reducing brain fog.

So which side is right? As valid as both perspectives are, there is no one-size-fits-all approach when it comes to health. The truth is, no two bodies are alike. What works wonders for one person might not yield the same results for another. Some people thrive on a plant-based diet, while others need the nutrients found in animal products to maintain their well-being. The key is finding balance—what I like to call a “vegan-forward” approach, where you incorporate the phytonutrients from plant-based diets while also getting the benefits of lean meats and fish. I advocate that you are the CEO of your own health, so talk to your dietician or doctor to find out what works for you and listen to your own body and its unique needs.

Non-Invasive Healing Therapy BioHack

Imagine if there was a way to help your body heal faster, reduce pain, and promote better bone and tissue health—all without surgery or medication. It may sound strange for a surgeon to promote less invasive procedures, but this technology exists today in the form of Pulsed Electromagnetic Field (PEMF) therapy.

Our bodies are made up of trillions of cells, and these cells rely on electrical signals to function. Just like the way your smartphone needs a charge to work, your cells need energy to do their job, whether that’s healing a wound or repairing a broken bone. PEMF therapy helps "charge up" these cells by increasing their energy and improving circulation to the affected area.

While PEMF has been around for decades, it’s most commonly used to treat orthopedic (bone) conditions. But PEMF isn’t limited to bones. People with conditions ranging from chronic pain to sports injuries have reported positive results from using PEMF devices at home or under the guidance of medical professionals.

The beauty of PEMF therapy is that it’s non-invasive—meaning no needles, no drugs, and no downtime. It can be a great alternative or supplement to more traditional treatment options like pain medications or physical therapy. Many users report feeling better after just a few sessions, and ongoing research suggests there may be even more ways PEMF can benefit our health.

The Nutritional Revolution

One of the reasons I have fallen in love with podcasting is that I’m always learning from other physicians, experts, and patients and I have to say that my latest was one of my favorite conversations.

I interviewed Dr Joel Fuhrman, a best-selling author who is famous for his Nutritional Revolution, which advocated for eating at least one pound of raw vegetables and another pound of cooked vegetables each day. The Nutritarian diet encourages people to eat whole plant foods and restrict dairy products, meat, and processed food. His passion and breadth of knowledge are just unbelievable!

I was absolutely floored when he shared a story about his groundbreaking research that patients could actually cure themselves of diabetes simply by following his nutritional approach. However, when he tried to get his research published, the medical journal rejected him because they were financially backed by Eli Lilly, a pharmaceutical company that makes diabetes medication.

Listening to Dr. Fuhrman’s story reminded me of the bigger picture in healthcare. We cannot overlook the power of nutrition and lifestyle in preventing and even curing diseases. I would highly recommend that you check out Dr. Fuhrman’s podcast and subscribe so you don’t miss future episodes.

Thanks for listening. As always, please share this with someone if you believe it could help them, and hit the bell icon to stay notified for my next newsletter. This way, you won’t miss any updates!
