The “Fidi” – the City’s downtown cluster of corporate skyscrapers is obsolete. First conceived 60 years ago as a white collar bee hive for hundreds of thousands of daily commuters from the entire Bay Area, it never has felt like it belonged to the People of San Francisco. It needs now to become “our” Downtown.
VISION ACTION PLAN
To plan, implement, and coordinate public projects and companion activity programs for San Francisco’s FiDi like those shown here, a new city Downtown Recovery Authority is necessary.
To provide the vision, management, financing, and public engagement necessary, this will take legislative approval by the San Francisco Board of Supervisors and Mayor’s Office.
A key first step will be for the San Francisco Planning Department to update the 40-year-old “Downtown Plan” that is still the only overall vision and detailed plan for Downtown San Francisco. It is totally out of date.
A “signature project” like the new Grand Embarcadero Park is essential. It will symbolize a rebirth of the city’s obsolete Fidi far and wide, and inspire all the people of San Francisco.
