It was an honor to witness the renaming of the Dennis D. Louwerse BARTA Transportation Center in downtown reading.  Anyone who new Dennis understands the contributions he made to the transit industry and the communities he served.  He was a mentor to many.  Often when I am faced with a challenging situation, I find my self reflecting on a conversation Dennis and I had.  His wisdom holds true today.  Thank you Dennis for the impact you made on the Transit Industry.  Below is an of an article from the Reading Eagle on the dedication ceremony.

New name for BARTA Transportation Center in Reading

It honors former Executive Director Dennis D. Louwerse, who died in 2013.

The BARTA Transportation Center, the bus station at Cherry and Eighth streets in Reading, has been renamed the . A small plaque honoring the large impact Louwerse had on regional public transportation was unveiled at the center Monday, commemorating BARTA's 45th anniversary.

The Berks Area Regional Transportation Authority was formed in 1973 at a time when private businesses were getting out of public transportation because it was no longer profitable, said David W. Kilmer, executive director of the South Central Transit Authority.

Berks County and the City of Reading jointly formed BARTA to purchase and take over the failing Reading Bus Co.  Louwerse, who died in 2013, was BARTA's executive director for 30 years.

"He left us way too soon and didn't really have time to sit back and enjoy all of his accomplishments," said county Commissioner Kevin S. Barnhardt, vice chairman of the BARTA board.

"Many of you will probably remember his often-told story of how he had to write a personal check to cover the initial diesel fuel when he arrived to operate BARTA," Barnhardt said, noting that Louwerse was also an ordained Methodist minister.  "This served him well when he prayed for money from the Federal Transit Administration," Barnhardt quipped.

Louwerse is remembered for the 2003 construction of the transit center that now bears his name and, across the street from the transit center, the 2006 development of the Park-n-Transit facility in anticipation of restoring passenger rail to Reading.

Louwerse's widow, Jean, said that her husband had a passion for transportation. She called the honor a little overwhelming. Their son, Dennis Jr., was also present for the dedication.

"I knew Dennis quite well," PA Senator Schwank said, "What a unique person he was, and also a visionary leader that helped to bring us to this place."

Louwerse moved a lot of people.  In 45 years, BARTA has transported more than 169 million passengers, Kilmer said.  "Over the years BARTA has invested over $35 million in facilities in Berks County and downtown Reading," Kilmer said. "BARTA continues being a trendsetter, merging administrative functions with Red Rose Transit.
