Class Description

A Tall Man Runs, Tawny Kangaroos Jump, Girls in School Uniforms Skip, are words that not only create vivid images in the mind's eye but also connect the brain to the muscles and stimulate blood flow to both the brain and body.

"Recent medical research supports the idea that the mind can change the physical brain, the mind, and physical body in a positive or negative way. It is a reflection of the placebo and nosebo effect."

This course is designed to help people with a diagnosis of Parkinson’s disease to walk more smoothly, move with greater confidence and comfort, sleep more deeply and restfully, and experience greater brain clarity. The course is made up of 7 modules (10 to 15 minutes each) that explain each exercise and visualization. Each module adds another element to the class project – a unique poem or visualization.

At the end of the course, the student will have a unique piece of poetry or visualization to use like a mantra, affirmation, or inspirational piece to encourage them to use their mind to walk with greater balance, confidence, and comfort.

An award-winning poet, Kimberly Burnham (instructor) is a brain health expert with a PhD in Integrative Medicine. Her dissertation focused on using complementary and alternative medicine to eliminate the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease.

No prior training or skills are necessary. Please consult with your primary health practitioner if you have any concerns. Some of the exercises involve visualizing and noticing the color green, using action verbs to stimulate your brain and muscles and long walking. Each exercise or is designed to help you create a more functional and clear brain. By the end of the class you may see improvements in your comfort, movement, and sleep with 5-10 minutes of exercises or visualizations a day.

Class Project Summary Description and Integration

Write a "poem” or “visualization script" that embodies your health goals, framed as positives desires, and created with action verbs, colors, and sensory words. This will be a kind of mantra to inspire you as you continue with the exercises you learned in this course and in all your activities.

The course will take you through each step of the poem or visualization’s creative process as well as provide exercises that help connect the body and brain and facilitate health. Words connect the brain and the body, expressing the sensations and response to the world around us. There is healing that comes through words.

Step 1: Assess.

Walk around for a few minutes. Feel your body. Evaluate the quality of your walking. Briefly assess how well you walk.

Module One:  Goal Setting

Today we are going to develop our goal setting skills. What do you want to improve in your health?

Step 2: Write 8 health goals, big and small.

Scribble down a list of eight health goals or things you want to improve this year. For example:

1. Enjoy better walking.

2. Have less pain.

3. Have more energy.

4. Stop eating junk food.

5. Sleep better without night terrors.

6. Eliminate tremors.

7. Get rid of shoulder tension.

8. End back pain.

Then look at the list. How many of the goals are written in a positive way.

"It is easier for the brain to reach for something it wants that to let go of what it doesn't want. It is easier to eat healthy than to lose weight. It is easier to smile more than to shout less. It is easier to ... fill in the blank from your own experience."

Step 3: Rewrite the 8 health goals framed in a positive way.

Look over the list. Rewrite them so that all the goals are framed in a positive way. What do you want more of? For example:

Step 4: Make the goals measurable.

Measurable goals are also easier to accomplish. Look at your list and think about ways to make them more measurable. How will you know when you accomplished the goal?

How far do you want to walk? How fast? How high do you want to reach? How much weight do you want to carry?

Step 5: Pull Out the Verbs

"The way we use action verbs changes our mind, brain and body."

Now pull out all the verbs in all your goals and write them out one or two words on each line like a poem. How do you want your body to act, move, and be? You can also give your “poem“ a title if you want. For example:

Module Two: The Physicality of the Legs: Visualizing Structure and Anatomy.

Today we will start with a guided visualization of the anatomy of the legs, musculoskeletal system, cellular aspects, elements & atoms, quarks. It is based on the Traditional Chinese Medicine idea:

"Where the mind goes, energy follows, and where the energy goes, blood follows. What you think about and say to yourself matters. Talk as if every cell in the body is listening."

Step 6: Write 8 health goals using vivid action words and joints or parts of the body doing the action.

Take your "poem" from the goal setting module and add some words to each line that talk about what part of your body is doing the goal. For example:

Module Three: Sensing the Leg Meridian, Colors and Traditional Chinese Medicine Acupressure meridians.

Six lines of energy from Traditional Chinese Medicine (acupuncture / acupressure) run down the legs. The wood elements associated with the color green are the Liver meridian on the inner thigh and the Gallbladder meridian on the outer side of the leg.

"Stimulating the yang gallbladder meridian and the yin liver meridian by visualizing the color green can stimulate dopamine circulation in the body. Several characteristics including wood, green, sour, and dopamine are associated with the gallbladder meridian."

Step 7: Write 8 goals using sensory words like red, soft, or tingling.

If you want to walk confidently what would that look like: green energy streaming up and down your legs, warm hands lifting, shoulders low and soft? For example:

Module Four: Visualizing the Midbrain, Substantia Nigra & Dopamine

Today's visualization is of the brain, specifically the midbrain, substantia nigra and dopamine.

“There is a Traditional Chinese Medicine idea that where the mind goes the energy follows and where the energy goes the blood follows. Where do you want to have better blood flow?”

Step 8: Add something to your "poem" about the mind or brain, what you are thinking as you accomplish your goal.

Module Five: Long Walking

As Parkinson's disease progresses, a typical posture is bent forward at the hips and short steps. It is not that the person can't take long strides but their brain predisposes them to take short shuffling steps. This exercise is about first visualizing yourself and a friend taking impossibly long steps and then safely taking long steps as you walk around your house or around the block.

Step 9: Write a poem as if you are describing yourself or another person doing the action.

Write a few words about this experience. What did it feel like to imagine yourself walking with long strides? How did it feel to consciously move your legs putting as much distance as possible between your feet? For example:

Module Six: Motor Imagery Solutions and Remembering the Future

If your goal is to walk comfortably to the park and back. Sit quietly and imagine yourself doing just that. Then imagine yourself looking out of the window as a friend or loved one accomplishes your goal (ie) walking to the park. If your goal is to run a marathon, imagine yourself running and then completing the marathon. What does it feel? What do you hear? What do you see or smell? How do the orange slices at the end feel?

Step 10: Write goal and a “poem” as if you have accomplished one of your goals.

I call it "Remembering the Future." Write a few words on each line describing the event or process as if you accomplished one of your goals. Use action verbs, colors, and sensation words. For example:

Noticing Changes

Last week I started noticing the difference

strength balance on uneven surfaces

smiling I recall how far I have come

motion smooth and easy for me now

anything I want abundant energy walks dances and bicycles

around me as I move through the world

Red apples green avocadoes yellow orange squash

a rainbow of vegetables satisfy me as I dream

I remember last night's dream

vivid colors words swirling movements flowing like silk

in dreams and life I am master of my destiny

movement walking running even

head sitting on neck on shoulders strong

flexible bamboo green and healthy

better today than yesterday

I walk

Module Seven: Class Project Summary Description and Integration

Step 11: Notice what has changed in how you walk. Reevaluate. Walk and feel. How has each step changed?

Step 12: Post your final visualization or “poem” to the community board. Declare your vivid vision of the future.

I was diagnosed 2 years ago at age 63. Symptoms were tremor in right leg, loss of handwriting ability,My normally beautiful cursive writing was now small cramped printing and soft voice. I also had difficulty rising from a seated position and have balance issues. I started out taking only Azilect, then Mirapex, and then Sinemet. Several months ago I started falling frequently, hence the reason for Sinemet. During the summer of 2021, I was introduced to Health Herbs Clinic and their effective Parkinson’s herbal protocol. This protocol relieved symptoms significantly, even better than the medications I was given. Visit www . healthherbsclinic . com , After First month on treatment, my tremors mysterious stopped, had improvement walking. After I completed the treatment, all symptoms were gone. I live a more productive life. I was fortunate to have the loving support of my husband and family. I make it a point to appreciate every day!
