Watts in the Wild EP 05: THE NEXT STOP
As we journey through the lush and rugged terrain of Arunachal Pradesh, the air around us feels different. It's thick with the scent of the forest, the rustle of leaves, and the distant calls of wildlife that echo through the trees. This is Pakke Tiger Reserve—a place where nature reigns supreme, and every sound, every shadow, tells a story of survival and harmony.
Our arrival in this untouched paradise marks a new chapter in our adventure. We've traveled over 2,500 kilometers from Gurugram, with each mile revealing the diverse landscapes and cultures that make India so incredibly rich. But Arunachal Pradesh, with its ancient forests and vibrant biodiversity, feels like the crown jewel of our journey. It's not just the beauty of this place that captivates us, but the deep connection between the land and the people who call it home.
Stepping into Pakke Tiger Reserve is like entering a different world—a world where conservation isn't just a goal; it's a way of life. The reserve is home to the majestic hornbills, the elusive Asiatic black bear, and the endangered white-winged duck. These creatures are more than just animals; they are symbols of the delicate balance that exists here, a balance that the local communities strive to protect every day.
One of the most profound experiences we've had on this journey was meeting the Nyishi community. These are people who have lived in harmony with nature for centuries, adapting their traditions to the needs of the present without losing sight of their roots. Mr. Basang, a respected elder in the Nyishi community, shared with us the story of their transformation.
There was a time when the Nyishi hunters would seek out the great hornbill, a bird of great cultural significance, for its magnificent beak, which they would use to adorn their traditional headgear. As the hornbill population started to decrease, the community realized that their hunting practices could cause permanent harm. With the help of the Wildlife Trust of India and the Arunachal Pradesh Forest Department, the Nyishi community found a solution that honored their heritage while protecting the species—they began using fiberglass beaks instead.
Hearing this story from Mr. Basang, we were struck by the power of change, by the idea that sustainability isn't just about preserving the past but about innovating for the future. The Nyishi people, with their deep respect for the natural world, show us that change doesn't have to mean losing who we are. Instead, it can be about finding new ways to celebrate our traditions while ensuring that they endure.
As we wrapped up our day, the sun began to set, casting long shadows across the forest floor. It was in these quiet moments that the true impact of what we'd witnessed began to sink in. Conservation isn't just about protecting animals or forests—it's about preserving the connections that tie us all to this earth. It's about understanding that every action we take has a ripple effect, that every choice can lead us toward a future where humans and nature thrive together.
Today we carry with us the lessons of the Nyishi community—a powerful reminder that sustainability starts with change, and that every one of us has a role to play in shaping a better world.
Join us as we continue this journey, exploring the wild, and discovering the stories that connect us all.
Sustainability Starts with change.
Stay tuned for Episode 6—there’s something incredible just around the corner.
