WATTS IN THE WILD: Episode 04 – THE CALL

As we were ready to end our journey at Kaziranga National Park, an unexpected and deeply touching moment awaited us. We were about to witness a heartwarming story that exemplifies the essence of wildlife conservation: the release of a buffalo calf who had been rescued in 2020 and was now ready to return to the wild in 2024.

Our adventure took us to the Burachapori Wildlife Sanctuary Wildlife Sanctuary, a beautiful part of Kaziranga National Park situated by the Brahmaputra River. Range Officer Mr. Sonam invited us to this significant event, guiding us through the lush landscape to the heart of the sanctuary.

Meeting Director Madam Sonali Gosh, we learned about the remarkable journey of the buffalo calf, who had been hand-raised after being rescued from the floods. The calf’s story went beyond recovery; it highlighted the compassion and dedication of those who cared for the buffalo calf. The sanctuary staff had worked tirelessly to create a safe, nurturing environment for the calf, complete with a water pool for drinking and bathing and electric fencing to keep the calf secure from potential threats.

Observing her in the enclosure, we saw a mixture of curiosity and trust in her eyes. The bond she had formed with her caretakers and her surroundings was evident.

The day of her release was nothing short of magical. As the gates opened, she stepped into the wild with a sense of excitement and newfound freedom that deeply moved us. Witnessing this moment was a powerful reminder of the natural connections that are vital to the ecosystem and underscored the importance of our conservation efforts.

As we departed from Kaziranga, we were filled with gratitude and inspiration from the dedication of those who work tirelessly to protect wildlife. This experience reaffirmed the impact of their hard work and the critical need for ongoing conservation.

Our journey now leads us to Pakke Tiger Reserve, but the memory of this poignant moment and the lessons we've learned will stay with us. We leave with a deeper appreciation for the beauty of nature and the commitment required to preserve it.

From care to freedom....a journey back into the wild.

Stay tuned for Episode 5—there’s something incredible just around the corner.
