Are We Looking Up Your Nose?

Are We Looking Up Your Nose?

OK, we've all been using video conferencing more than we ever thought imaginable since the COVID-19 pandemic began. I am sure most people would agree that it has not been ideal (nor has the "physical-distancing"). Nothing beats seeing people face-to-face. But you have to admit that it has turned out to be wonderful technology - at the right time in history - to help us stay connected to family, friends, colleagues, customers, and business partners during these challenging times.

Now, after more than 100 days of doing this, and what seems like thousands of conference calls later...I have one simple observation and request for all of us as the video conference warriors of 2020...

Please, please, please prop-up your laptop and/or your camera so we are not looking up your nose! :-)

Please laugh a little here. We've all seen it and done it. Guilty as charged! Sadly, it is something that most people find uncomfortable and won't tell you. And YES, it's petty and unimportant - especially given the magnitude of issues we are facing in the world today. You're right. I completely agree with you!

The reality is (whether you intended or not)...if your laptop, your screen, or your camera is below your eyes (i.e. typically on your desk or a table)...the audience is looking UP your nose. If you are looking DOWN at your screen and your camera...the audience is looking UP your nose.

I say grab a couple of thick books and put them under your laptop for your next video conference. It's a simple trick that everyone can do, and it makes talking to people on a screen SO MUCH MORE enjoyable.

A huge thank you to all of the people like Kimberli Allen and dozens others that have written advice about video conferencing best practices - even long before this pandemic began. I will do my best to make sure you are not looking up my nose on our next call together. Stay safe, healthy, and positive. Be kind, loving, and understanding. And keep selling.
