What can we learn from the Twitter Hack?

As you might have seen in the news, on the 16.07.2020 the most influential people on Twitter had their accounts hacked, the hacker or the hackers have then posted a tweet saying that the person would send 2'000$ to people that send them 1'000$ via bitcoin. Below you can see a screenshot:

I will not talk about this particular issue but on what we as Business owners, managers, and employees can learn from this.

The issue

In today's world each one of us has multiple accounts spread out on different social media platforms: Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, etc... we do this to get reach and attain relevancy online.

This is the potential upside of these platforms is reach and the potential downside is that if your account gets compromised you risk that this reach that you built up in the years is used against you, either to destroy your image or to use your authority to sell or scam your audience.

Solutions

In this specific hack, you couldn't have done anything in terms of security to inhibit access to the hacker/s since they compromised a control panel at Twitter and thus had access to all accounts without any username/password input.

Generally, the key takeaway is to use Two-factor authentication and to delete all of your accounts that are in disuse. After covering your bases with these safety measures the only thing left is to hope that platforms like the aforementioned ones decide to introduce tighter control as to how they let employees access our accounts.

Thank you for your time, this was a short but interesting and current topic that I wanted to cover with my daily articles. BTW I was on vacation last week and this is the reason for my lack of posts.
