Damen unveils floating offshore wind construction support vessel concept

Damen has developed a new vessel concept that it claims can accelerate the development of large-scale floating wind farm installation. The Damen FLOW-SV measures approximately 150 metres in length and a 32-metre beam and is specially designed to install ground tackles for offshore turbine floaters.

When it comes to the number of vessels needed for support, the most important factor is the number of turbines. The capacity of individual turbines is increasing allowing project overall capacity to increase with a reduced number of turbines needed to achieve this. Currently, the number of turbines being installed is outpacing the capacity increases – good news for vessel demand, as our last forecast showed.

Every Turbine Counts...

The chart below shows how the proportion of turbines supported by different strategies is changing. SOVs are increasing their share of the market, which is now around 35%. This is unsurprising as many near shore locations have been developed and future installations are further offshore.
