Importance of Soft skills and how it can be developed?

When it comes to hiring, hard skills are at the top of the list for many companies. That is, they will look for job-specific talents as well as the training or experience required to do the work properly.

While suitable education, training, and work experience are critical, you should also examine fewer tangible qualities such as soft skills. After all, having the most brilliant and qualified personnel isn't enough. It's about their ability to collaborate as a team for the benefit of their personal and the company's success.

Before going further, let’s know more about soft skills.

What are soft skills?

Soft skills refer to how you work and act. Interpersonal and communication skills are the two key areas of soft skills that companies look for in job candidates.

Time management, listening skills, networking, teamwork, creative thinking, and conflict resolution are examples of soft skills required for career success.

How Soft skills work?

For most employers, soft skills are critical to success. Employees in all positions are required to interact with one another in some fashion.

Another reason managers and businesses seek individuals with soft skills is that soft skills are transferable skills that can be applied to any position. As a result, personnel with soft skills are more adaptive.

Soft skills are very important in customer-facing employment. Customers come into contact with these staff on a regular basis. To be able to listen to a customer and provide helpful and polite service, numerous soft skills are required.

Importance of Soft Skills

Soft skills are essential and indispensable skills that everyone should have. A person's potential can be limited by a lack of certain talents. Having soft skills, on the other hand, improves one's capacity to work with people and has a good impact on one's job or even one's personal life through improving ways of engaging with others. Soft skills, as previously said, cannot be learnt through training and are more difficult to develop. They are more concerned with a person's character, relationships, and personality.

With the advent of artificial intelligence in practically every sphere of labour, the world is changing quickly. Machines are replacing and automating tasks that humans once performed. Soft skills, on the other hand, cannot be replaced. As a result, these become a distinction for a job seeker looking to integrate into the fast-changing labour market landscape and meet any organization's hiring needs. As a result of this shift, human-centric skills are becoming increasingly important. From the standpoint of a company, hiring employees with advanced soft skills can have a substantial impact on their working capability. To summarise, the following criteria highlight the relevance of soft skills from both a person and a corporate perspective:

For individuals,

  • The modern workplace is interpersonal, and the future is all about soft skills
  • High demand by recruiters and organizations
  • They are hard to automate
  • Career progression, promotion, and growth

For businesses,

  • Improved productivity
  • Improved leadership
  • Better teamwork
  • Enhanced employee satisfaction
  • Increased workplace communication

How can soft skills training benefit company?

You're not alone if you're having trouble finding qualified candidates to fill unfilled positions at your company. According to Cengage data, 73% of companies are having trouble finding suitable workers, and 34% believe schools haven't effectively educated pupils for the labour market.

While high schools and post-secondary institutions are focusing on teaching pupils computer and technology skills in order to overcome the tech skills gap, soft skills development is being neglected. Employers are responsible for filling such vacancy.

Although soft skills training necessitates a major investment of time, money, and other precious resources, having a staff with well-developed interpersonal strengths has numerous advantages.

Here are a few ways soft skills training can benefit organization:

  • Improves productivity: According to research done by a professor at the University of Michigan, workers who have undergone soft skill training are 12 percent more productive than those who have not. Employees who can communicate effectively and are better equipped to deal with challenges, decisions, and stressors in the workplace can accomplish work more quickly and create higher-quality results.
  • Reduces turnover: According to the same survey, employees who have received soft skills training are less likely to leave their jobs. Employees that can effectively collaborate and cooperate with their co-workers are frequently more involved in their jobs. Additionally, people who have been trained in leadership and presenting abilities feel more empowered on the work, which can lead to higher retention rates.
  • Bolsters employee satisfaction: Poor communication and emotional intelligence have a detrimental impact on economic outcomes, but they can also lead to a poisonous workplace culture. Employees feel supported and fulfilled at work when all team members (including management professionals) are trained in critical soft skills.
  • Increases ROI: It's no surprise that soft skills lead to improved productivity, retention, and employee satisfaction, as well as a healthier bottom line. In fact, according to a University of Michigan research, soft skills training helped yield a 256 percent net ROI. To put it another way, while helping employees develop their soft skills can be time-consuming, you'll soon recoup your investment.

How to develop soft skills in the workplace?

Employees must first engage in some self-reflection before they can determine the soft skills training, they require, which can be a painful process. This can be difficult, but it can also be rewarding.

Below are some ways, it can be developed.

  • Developing a learning mindset: Soft skills development, such as resilience, emotional intelligence, and agility, is an excellent method to prepare your employees for change.

But first, how can you prepare people for the profound personal changes that developing soft skills entails?

After all, it's impossible to make employees self-aware. You can't compel them to participate in training. However, you can emphasise the value of soft skills in the job.

Assisting employees in realising that soft skills can be developed and that they will improve their performance. Giving them easy examples of workplace soft skills, such as active listening, and asking them to think about how these qualities affect their employee experience.

This will help them to open up and embrace soft skills training.

  • Encouraging self-reflection: You won't be able to improve or develop soft skills in the job until you first identify which soft skills need to be improved.

So, before you begin assigning courses to employees (or growing soft skills in the workplace in general), you must first determine which soft skills development training each employee need.

Encourage employees to think about the soft talents they already have and be honest with themselves about the ones that need improvement. The best strategy to uncover your employees' soft skills weaknesses is to use a combination of self-assessment and 360-degree feedback.

  •  Expanding knowledge and understanding: Employees sometimes only need a little coaching to recognise they aren't as friendly, talkative, or positive as they could be. Seminars and training programmes held at local events or conferences can help employees understand what soft skills development is and why it is important.

Alternatively, whether your employees are tech-savvy, new or seasoned remote workers, or are frequently on the go, online training may be the best option. Instead of a boardroom, investing in a learning management system (LMS) that makes developing soft skills enjoyable and engaging (more on that next). Keeping in mind that you can transition to online training without breaking the bank if you choose a free LMS.

  •  Leverage powerful LMS software: When your staff can learn from anywhere, there's little incentive to travel to a physical site (especially now that it's nearly impossible). Soft skills training courses may be accessible, engaging, and fun no matter where your learners are or what device they're using with the support of a comprehensive learning management system (LMS).

E-learning has proven to be one of the most successful methods for building soft skills in the workplace, and it has been used to teach busy or distant teams by a number of firms.

  • Providing opportunities for practice: Practice! This is how employees' soft talents can be developed. After all, it's worthless to teach staff how to collaborate before isolating their work duties.

Instead, provide them with the opportunity to put their newly gained soft talents to the test.

Outdoor retreats are a great way to practise soft skills like teamwork, collaboration, and communication in a fun and risk-free environment. Employees can practise problem-solving and creative thinking skills with opt-in assignments.

Hard skills are unquestionably important for employee performance, especially as technology gets more sophisticated and complex. Soft skills, on the other hand, are just as important for job performance and foster a happier, healthier company culture. Better company outcomes and a better worker experience can be achieved by investing resources in strengthening team members' interpersonal strengths.
