Whats the Difference between Architects and Planners?

Whats the Difference between Architects and Planners?

I was just asked this question in one of our property investors WhatsApp groups and thought "that answer sounds like a social media post"

My answer -

A good Architect and a good planning consultant should work well together.

The best way to think of an Architect is a bit of a Jack of All Trades

They'll have knowledge of Accoustics , but will still rely on a Accoustic Professional in specifics

They'll understand M&E - but.....

They'll understand all aspects of the project to a pretty high level, but when it comes to the real specialist aspects, then we call in the specialist.

Its the same with planners, they have spent years reading and understanding policy to a level of specialism that I dont have (at least the good ones do - wouldnt be the first time Ive had to educate someone.....)

Im the first to say my planning knowledge is fairly good, but there are gaps (there is no way I could carry all the knowledge as well as everything else).

Its the same in reverse - planners, great at policy, but generally not designers.

We do about 90% of our planning work, but for the more contentious jobs, or the ones that need that higher level of knowledge - we bring a planner on board.

The challenge is that not all Architects and All planners are necessarily all that competent. ( I hate to speak ill of my own profession, but its the truth - sometimes I wonder how some of them dress themselves)

What do you think the difference is?

(My first answer was "about £30k of student debt")

Good article. I agree with numerous points that you've made. But it's like most professions, there's always incompetency to be found. I think the key is to work with like-minded, competent and reliable professionals. Having one point of contact for clients and delivering to their requirements in any capacity.
