What’s next at the Frankfurter Buchmesse

The international book fair Frankfurter Buchmesse has been a staple in the publishing industry calendar, has a long history in brand licensing and books-to-screen, but has now ventured into games too. An interview with Birgit Fricke , Key Account Management & Sales, Frankfurter Buchmesse.

Can you please tell us how the Bologna Children’s Book Fair and Frankfurter Buchmesse are collaborating?

I am very excited that Frankfurter Buchmesse and the Bologna Children’s Book Fair are now working together on a new games business area at both fairs, which provides publishing professionals with the opportunity to network with the games industry. The main goal is to find a bridge between the different media and to facilitate business opportunities by working together on content and IPs, whether it is book to game, game to book, or gamification of educational content etc.

Both fairs, with their wide range of different customers, provide a whole lot of new business opportunities. Expertise and support for the Games Business Centre comes from SpielFabrique which stems from a Franco-German video game initiative created in April 2015 by Media Deals at the International Games Week Berlin.

The first of these games areas will launch at this year’s Frankfurter Buchmesse. Exhibitors who take advantage of the new offer in both Frankfurt and Bologna will receive a discount of 20%.  (link to registration form ).

Is the book fair offering anything in terms of films and series adaptations?

Over the last few decades, international producers and professionals from the world of TV and film have visited Frankfurter Buchmesse “on the hunt” for new stories, characters and ideas.  In response, we have launched a series of events centred around the Book-to-Screen Day on Friday, October 18,  designed to connect players from the publishing world with the film industry.

The activities include a site tour for international production executives, several networking opportunities, and a masterclass on best practices for first steps in the book-to-screen business, with producer Delphine Clot and book rights expert Maÿlis Vauterin—both founders of the Paris-based agency Matriochkas. We’ll also host an exclusive Book-to-Screen matchmaking event in cooperation with the Berlin Film Festival at which international producers will have one-on-one meetings with selected international publishing houses and agencies.

What is THE ARTS+?

THE ARTS+ connects the publishing world with other creative industries such as licensing, games and film. The focus of THE ARTS+ is content and stories in various forms: ideas, concepts, texts, images and content from all sectors. We have an entire area in Hall 4.1 dedicated to THE ARTS+.

Our newest addition at this year’s fair is THE ARTS+ Lounge, a dedicated meeting space for producers to connect with publishing professionals from around the world and to mingle with new and existing partners. It’s all about cross-industry interaction and the marketing of stories. Our partners in the lounge are Licensing Magazine, Creative Europe, Hessen Film & Medien , Berlin International Film Festival (Berlinale) and Licensing International and together we will be hosting several networking events at the end of each day.

Something else we are excited about this year is the revival of THE ARTS+ Stage in Hall 4.1.  Here, visitors can look into the future: It’s all about new developments, trends and innovations in the publishing sector.

This is where the publishing industry and companies and agencies from the creative industries can meet to talk about content and stories from different media sectors. Over the weekend, the focus will be on topics such as comics, manga and anime.

I am especially looking forward to the panels organized by LICENSING MAGAZINE and moderated by Cristina Angelucci . A panel will be a journey through the rich Smurfs’ world, from comics and books to their positioning as a global brand, going through gaming developments. Other panels will be around book adaptations and the complexity of combining publishing and sustainability through licensing.

Many other events will be of interest for licensing, audiovisual and gaming professionals. So we look forward welcoming you in Frankfurt next October!
