When to Ask for Help as an Entrepreneur: A Story of Courage, Resilience, and Record Growth

Are you working extremely long hours, sacrificing your health and time with loved ones, all for the sake of your business? As we approach Tap the Potential LLC ’s Better Business Better Life Jumpstart, I wanted to take a moment and share a powerful story of resilience, growth, and strength with you.

Catherine Anesi , MSW, Owner and Director of The Lighthouse Retreat and Wellness Center , came to Tap the Potential in a moment of extreme burnout and desperation. Cathy had poured her heart into a business focused on helping others heal, and like so many entrepreneurs, the pandemic turned her entire business upside down. She was beginning to question if she should shut her doors. After working with our coaches, Cathy not only saw her business hit record growth but also has a business that supports her life- not the other way around.

Here is her story:

"I discovered Tap the Potential’s Better Business, Better Life Program at a time when I felt very alone in my business. I was at a crossroads, ready to throw in the towel after 10 years of putting my whole heart and soul into something. I was asking, “How the heck do I run this business? How do I make it profitable? How can I step away and breathe a little bit and not feel like I have to be there every minute?” We're a small business and we had a beautiful space, and everything looked lovely from the outside. But really in my heart, I knew that I couldn't sustain it. And then COVID hit. My office closed in one day. And we went completely virtual the next.

As I considered joining, I was thinking that if I don't move forward with this, what am I looking at on the other side, more of the same? And, what if it's more of the same for another six months? Or, what if it gets worse? What is that going to be for me? I decided this is my one last shot, I'm going to do this, I'm going to make the investment. I came in, ready and super committed to get everything that I possibly could out of this program to see if my business could survive, then thrive. Little by little, following the steps, listening to all the Profit by Design podcast episodes, doing everything that Tap the Potential team asked me to do--I did it all. Now here we are 10 months later, and a year from COVID. It's been amazing!

We blew the walls off the office. I'm really proud of us--we pivoted really fast! Now I can have as many therapists I want who can work whenever they want to work. We have so much more flexibility and can have as many clients as we want in a group. We are not confined by our physical space.  And, we are streamlining the business. Tap the Potential helped us find our sweet spot. We’re focusing on that now.

We’ve experienced a 41% increase in revenue this quarter, compared to the same quarter last year. When we started, our gross margin was 30%. Now it’s 42%. We are continuing to work towards 60 to 65%, gross margin. Our net profit was 7%. Now it’s at 20%! This all happened during COVID.

I can't believe it myself! I now understand that the higher profit margins give us room to grow and innovate. I can pay the bills AND get paid, instead of just going month to month and praying.

Leadership Bootcamp really helped my employees understand where the business is going and that they are key players in that. Before Leadership Bootcamp, everyone would come to me with complaints about something that's not going well, and then it was my responsibility to fix it or make it right. My employees come to me now with solutions, rather than just telling me what's wrong. They have ideas they want to share. They're doing things on their own. It's opened up a healthier communication style with us. They take ownership. I know I cannot do it alone. From the How to Hire the Best course, I learned so much about the psychology of hiring people. In the past, it’s been a nightmare. The worst part of owning a business is getting good employees because I put so much time and effort into training, and then they just don't fit. It's so expensive! I used to come from a place of desperation when hiring people. I'm not doing that anymore. I'm going to wait because the gross margin enables me to do that. It creates that little cushion, that little space, so that I can say, “Okay, we're not desperate. We're just going to wait. We’re going to find the right person.

Honestly, I didn't think I would ever get here. I'm really grateful because I can see, I can see where my business can go. I can see all the people we can serve. I can see the growth in my employees."
