When Life's Catch-22 Catches You

I have always found one of the biggest catch-22s of life to be finding a job, especially the coveted "dream job." I have both personal and professional experience with this predicament. During my time at Hired, I spent almost a year and a half coaching technical talent through their job search: resume writing, interview prep, offer negotiation and the like. The irritation spewing from my candidates was evident, and I really couldn't blame them knowing what I know about hiring and recruiting. I made it my personal goal to mitigate their concerns and shift their focus to landing the role that would bring them closer to their goals.

Over the past few months, I have been embarking on my own job search journey, and I have to say, I have never been more frustrated. Frustrated that companies aren't understanding my skill set, frustrated that companies haven't been getting back to me, but most of all, frustrated that companies aren't understanding my exponential (and proven) potential. Unfortunately, these frustrations can often times lead to discouragement - I saw this plight by the hundreds in my previous role.

The irony of a job search coach struggling through this situation is humorous in ways. It just goes to show that anyone can be entrapped by this catch-22, regardless of your professional knowledge and experience. Two and a half years ago, with only 4 months of experience, I was fortunate enough to get the opportunity to work at Hired. They were true believers in my potential, and since then, it has become incredibly important for me to land at a company who is willing to take a chance on me. I'm excited to find my very own "dream job" in an enviornment that embraces my tenacity and passion. Until the right opportunity shows itself, it's time to start taking my own advice: stay focused, stay persistent, find advocates for your skills and potential, and never forget the value you will bring to a company.

I share my setbacks for a few reasons, one of which is to normalize feeling let down by your job search. It is a disheartening feeling to not be wanted by all the companies you apply to, but remember, you will only end up at one company - it will be the one who believes in you. I have a great amount of gratitude for those who have stood by my side and advocated for me in the past few months. To pay it forward, I would love to help anyone in similar circumstances in any way I can. I believe fiercely in using my professional knowledge and network to help others - if you feel I can assist you in getting closer to your goals, please don't hesitate to reach out. Good luck job searchers, you got this!
