What is wireless charging standard Qi?

Qi (pronounced /tʃiː/ CHEE; from the Chinese word qi) is an open interface standard that defines wireless power transfer using inductive charging over distances of up to 4 cm (1.6 inches), and is developed by the Wireless Power Consortium. The system uses a charging pad and a compatible device, which is placed on top of the pad, charging via resonant inductive coupling.

As a global standard, Qi has been adopted by brands like AppleHuaweiLG ElectronicsSamsungXiaomi.

What is wireless charging standard PMA?

PMA is another major wireless charging standard, however, not that widely used as Qi standard. From the smartphone list above, you can easily find that only Samsung phones adopted PMA (and with Qi).

How do the wireless car mounts work with these smartphones?

The wireless car mounts work by transferring power from the car mount to the receiver built-in the back of smartphones. The charger uses an induction coil to create an alternating electromagnetic field, which the receiver coil in the phone converts back into electricity to be fed into the battery.

In many countries, it is illegal to drive a vehicle or ride a motorbike while using a hand-held mobile phone or a similar device like an iPhone. It’s also illegal to use a hand-held phone when supervising a learner driver or rider. In this scenario, car mounts become so necessary to prevent you from breaking the laws while you are enjoying the benefits of a smartphone.
