Why the construction sector needs leaders like Andy Street, Mayor of the West Midlands
Yesterday I launched a brand-new Podcast series, sponsored by Ritchie Bros auctioneers, which is aimed at supporting the Construction and Plant sectors in this difficult time. Andy Street supported the launch by taking part in the first edition you can listen to at the link below.
Andy is the Mayor of the West Midlands, I met him earlier this year at a special construction and plant skills live event, put on by the West Midlands Combined Authority. Before my first of now three interviews with Andy, I watched him talking to the many people that were exhibiting and attending that event. The event itself was supported by both Tier 1 contractors, the CITB and key players in the plant sector and was aimed at attracting people to consider a career in construction.
What has become clear to me after speaking to Andy, is that we need more people with passion and enthusiasm like him to help us raise the profile of our industry. With many different roles and opportunities available for young people, in particular, my first interview with Andy was around both skills and HS2, which at the time hadn't been given the go-ahead.
You can see what he had to say in the link to this interview below.

What I have learnt talking to Andy is that not only is he a champion of the construction industry in the region, he is also a big advocate of digital technology. I believe it is the adoption of digital technology that we now need to accelerate if we are going to deliver projects more efficiently and productively. This is something that's going to be incredibly important when we come out of this difficult time.
For my second meeting and interview with Andy, I went to the Wolverhampton City College, where the West Midlands Combined Authority has invested a new plant training area and plant apprenticeship programme. This has again been supported by the industry and at that time cleared up by local earthworks contractor, McAuliffe Group. They support apprenticeships as a business and are two of their apprentices, Francesca and Lewis who I interviewed at the skills event that reflects the type of young people that I am so passionate to attract into the industry.
This is why wanted to highlight their video below in this article, to show just how enthusiastic they are about finding a career that was made for them by McAuliffe.

In our second interview for the new Plant Apprenticeship launch at the City of Wolverhampton College, Andy spoke about the importance of collaboration again and also at this time we both were able to have a smile on our face with the news that HS2 was given the go-ahead.

Shortly after, I then went to Conexpo 2020 in Las Vegas, to work with Nick Drew reporting on all of the new equipment and technologies at the show, which you can see on this YouTube playlist
On my return, fortunately just two days before the US went into lockdown, I came back to a new world. A scared family, my parents that were in total lockdown due to their vulnerability to the virus and my home country that quite literally had changed so much in one week.
It was difficult to get my head around, but as I have seen, week by week more people doing great things, supporting individuals and the industry in which I love, I recognised that I had an opportunity to do my bit. So, the launch of my new ‘Construction and Plant industry support series’ (not a catchy title I know) was born and launched by Andy Street himself.
He very kindly made time from me to talk on the first podcast of the series and just like all of us, I am sure he will have his own worries about family and individuals in his life. But it doesn’t stop the tireless work that he is doing right now to support and collaborate with industry, which has to be commended.
And as he and his team moved quickly with the industry and education partners it has been collaborating with throughout the sector, the West Midlands Combined Authority has managed to support online funding availability to boost investment in the region. You can find out more about this and all of the other work the WMCA does on its website www.wmca.org.uk
As Andy explains in the podcast, many construction projects are in the pipeline in this region in which I live and that gives me a sense of hope and positivity for the future of the sector. This is also why I wanted to launch the support series to see if I can help people find out useful information and meet new people online that are doing their bit for the industry, by sharing their thoughts through the podcast series.
What I hope this will achieve is the creation of more connection in this digitally social world we live in, bringing the industry together. I talk about the connected site, new technologies and construction in some of my other podcasts, but I believe the most important connection we can make is individual connections to one another.
If this podcast series does one thing, I hope it helps that to happen. There is going to be a lot more to listen to and as we get back to work there will be a lot more videos from me to see and share in the future. I believe in this period we must also think about how we can communicate in a positive way, how we can connect with others and thank those that have worked so hard on our behalf.
So, I would like to end this article by saying thanks to everybody that is engaging with me online, thanks to Ritchie Bros auctioneers for supporting this series and thanks again to Andy Street for launching it.
And my final thank you is to all those essential workers out there, not just our NHS heroes, but the kind smiling helpful people in the supermarkets, those that have been collecting my bins, the teachers that have been teaching my children and those people that have phoned me for a chat. All of your time and efforts are very much appreciated, stay safe out there and I look forward to seeing as many of you as I can face-to-face in the future.
