Why Is a “Mobile” Company Building a Desktop Solution?

Mediafly’s technology truly is device agnostic. As we continue to build on the Mediafly platform, we’ve seen that success is determined by enabling contextual delivery and interaction with content that has been optimally mobilized to best-fit the device and use case. This product vision has helped us continually address the needs of complex sales and marketing organizations with SalesKit and the needs of television and movie studios with ProReview. Our customers can engage with content within the context of the device they are using.

We enable company content to be delivered to and accessed on any device (iPad, Roku, desktop browsers) as well as on any operating system (iOS, Android, Windows 8, and web). As flexible as our platform is, our customers told us that they wanted to use their laptops while offline, and the user activity we analyzed confirmed this.

We are weeks away from releasing a brand new desktop application for Mediafly SalesKit and ProReview. Our desktop application is compatible with Windows 7 and later, and Mac OS X 10.7 and later. It features a fully offline experience, smart synchronization, and automatic upgradeability.

Why are we building the desktop application?

For a couple of years after the launch of the iPad, we thought that mobile would be the future of computing. We focused most of our app development on iOS and Android and built amazing apps. Everyone was talking about mobile, adopting mobile, and rolling out mobile devices and apps.

Fast-forward to 2015, and things started to change.

  • We believe the number of companies adopting a “mobile first” strategy is leveling off. For every company that armed sales teams with mobile devices and apps, we find several others that haven’t and have no plans to.
  • Windows 8.1 laptop/tablet hybrids, like Microsoft’s Surface Pro line, are the future for these companies that don’t plan to adopt iPads or Android. The devices have matured to a point that they really can serve as beautiful presentation and full computing devices together, completely eliminating the need to support yet another device.
  • Market trends justify this as well: Sales of iPads have leveled off, and Android holds only 26% market share in Enterprise device activations.
  • In 2014, we released our beautiful Web Viewer. Since that time, usage of our web experience on Windows and Mac devices has grown dramatically, and it is now our #1 platform. Consider this: Mediafly offers “mobile apps as a service”, yet our number one platform is PCs!

What are our expectations for the desktop application?

We expect the desktop application to be used by more people than our mobile platforms within 18 months of the full launch. It will lead new feature development and user experiences, and provide rich data to our product teams about how to better improve Mediafly products for our users.

Desktop will be the sixth platform to which Mediafly is able to deliver content. It will initially mirror the key features that have made our mobile and web platforms so popular:

  • a beautiful and clean interface
  • full offline support
  • smart synchronization with the cloud
  • support for video, audio, documents, comments, notes and collections.

During the remainder of the year, we will continue to build in more advanced features.

Make sure to check out the desktop application’s features for more information on the capabilities of the desktop app.
