Why is no one taking ESOS seriously?

There’s a new headline every week telling us that businesses are not prepared for the Energy Savings Obligation Scheme (ESOS) which they must comply with in just 6 months, now is the time for businesses to ensure that complacency doesn’t prevent compliance …

Just last week, Energy Live News reported that 60% of businesses haven’t budgeted for ESOS and now the Environment Agency, administrators of the scheme, have said that only 32 businesses notified them of their compliance. 32…out of the 14,000 that will have to comply! This clearly leaves a lot to do – so what could be the reasons behind such a slow start?

Is it a problem of awareness? From what we’ve seen, ESOS has been a hot topic across industry press and events since at least the start of this year so that shouldn’t be the problem.

Are businesses unsure if they qualify? The Environment Agency last week sent letters to all businesses that have to comply so that should clear up this issue. Is there confusion over which part of the business is responsible?

Is this a group or divisional function? Is this a function of the Energy Management or Sustainability team? The responsibility will vary in organisations – but just make sure someone is doing it! Regardless, as the business case for energy efficiency continues to grow in strength, a joined up approach across your organisation will help ensure you get the best results.

Do businesses see ESOS driving any further energy savings opportunities? For some there is a compelling case to embrace ESOS as a great opportunity to invest in energy efficiency and reduction measures, rather than just another compliance exercise. For other businesses, already invested in driving sustainability through energy management, does ESOS just create more ‘green tape’ which could even divert resource away from energy saving activities?

Or is everyone just busy and 6 months still seems like plenty of time? This is understandable – we’re all busy! – but whether you want to see real benefits from ESOS or whether you just want to ensure compliance , your business needs to start planning, securing budget and preparing reporting requirements now. Just think about how fast the next 6 months will go! Now really is the time to start picking up the pace and putting ESOS on your agenda. Hi Robin, sorry for the late reply. Yes we understand BS has plans in place to comply.

Hi Jamie, hopefully it won't come to that! In all seriousness we have spoken to some very well informed people recently who expressed concerns about the number of auditors who are able to complete audits at larger industrial sites with specialist process to consider. I hope this doesn't become a constraint for those in the manufacturing industry.
