Why is volunteering so important?

As a Design Specialist at Cadent, I've always been passionate about making a positive impact both within and outside the workplace. Last year, I had the privilege of organising a volunteering day where my colleagues and I, a team of 15 dedicated individuals, partnered with SeaLife to clean up the Manchester canals. This experience was profoundly rewarding, not only because we contributed to the environmental health of our community but also because it fostered a sense of camaraderie and shared purpose among us.

In addition to the canal cleanup, I also participated in multiple volunteering days at local schools through our partnership with Elevate. These initiatives focused on working with children to help them prepare for their future careers. Guiding young minds and offering them the tools and confidence to succeed in the professional world has been an incredibly fulfilling experience. It’s a reminder of the power of mentorship and the significant impact we can have on the next generation.

I was honored to receive the Volunteer of the Year Award from Cadent for these efforts. This recognition is a testament to the incredible support and enthusiasm of my colleagues, without whom these initiatives would not have been possible.

Volunteering is more than just giving time; it's about creating meaningful change. It's about stepping out of our daily routines to contribute to something larger than ourselves. Through these activities, I've witnessed firsthand the transformative power of collective effort. It strengthens our communities, enriches our lives, and enhances our sense of belonging and purpose.

For those considering volunteering, I encourage you to take the leap. Start small—identify a cause you are passionate about and reach out to local organizations to see how you can help. If you're looking to organize your own volunteering activities, rally a group of like-minded colleagues or friends, and leverage partnerships with established organizations, as we did with SeaLife and Elevate. Collaboration amplifies our impact and ensures that our efforts are both effective and sustainable.

Remember, the journey of volunteering is not only about the destination but also about the experiences and relationships built along the way. It's about making a difference, one small step at a time. By volunteering, we not only enhance the lives of others but also enrich our own in immeasurable ways. Let’s continue to foster a culture of giving back and inspire others to join us on this rewarding journey.

Volunteering is part of the fabric of Cadent - we offer every employee two days' extra paid leave (additional to annual leave), every year, to volunteer in the communities we serve. Last year, our team contributed more than 1,250 volunteering days.
