Winter Safety Checklist for Manufactured Home Living

1. Frozen Pipes Prevention:

• Insulate Pipes: Wrap exposed pipes with insulation to prevent freezing. Pay extra attention to pipes in unheated areas like crawl spaces.  
• Drip Faucets: Allow faucets to drip slightly to relieve pressure and reduce the risk of pipes freezing. Focus on both hot and cold water faucets.  
• Seal Drafts: Seal any gaps or drafts in your home to keep cold air out and maintain a consistent temperature inside.  
• Heat Tape: Consider installing heat tape on vulnerable pipes. Follow the manufacturer's instructions carefully.

2. Slippery Walkways and Steps:

• De-Icing Materials: Keep de-icing materials, such as salt or sand, on hand to prevent ice buildup on walkways and steps.  
• Shovel Regularly: Stay ahead of snow accumulation by shoveling walkways promptly after snowfall to prevent ice formation.  
• Non-Slip Mats: Place non-slip mats near entrances and high-traffic areas to provide traction and reduce the risk of slips and falls.  
• Proper Footwear: Wear appropriate footwear with good traction when walking on icy surfaces.

3. Fire Prevention:

• Heating Appliance Inspection: Have heating appliances, such as furnaces and space heaters, inspected regularly by a professional.  
• Clear Space Around Heaters: Ensure that there is a clear space of at least three feet around heating appliances and that no flammable materials are nearby.  
• Fireplace Safety: If you have a fireplace, have the chimney inspected and cleaned annually. Use a fire screen to prevent sparks.  
• Carbon Monoxide Detectors: Ensure carbon monoxide detectors are installed and in working condition, especially if using gas appliances.

TIP: Never use extension cords to plug in a heater. One of the leading causes of a home fire is a unit that has been incorrectly plugged in. Always plug your heater directly into the wall.

4. Emergency Preparedness:

• Emergency Kit: Prepare an emergency kit with essentials such as blankets, non-perishable food, water, flashlights, and a first aid kit.  
• Evacuation Plan: Develop and review an evacuation plan with your family, including a meeting point outside the home.

5. General Winter Safety:

• HVAC Maintenance: Schedule regular maintenance for your heating system to ensure optimal performance.
