Women's History Month Spotlight: Lynne Hiriak, SVP Design
In honor of Women’s History Month, we wanted to take a moment to celebrate and acknowledge the contributions of the amazing women who work at J.Crew Group. We are incredibly proud to be a company that is largely women-led. As part of this celebration, we're excited to spotlight Lynne Hiriak , SVP of Design.
We asked her a few questions. Here's what she had to say:
Q: What does the celebration of Women’s History Month mean to you?”
LH: As we embrace Women's History Month, it's not merely a time for reflection, but a continuous celebration of the remarkable achievements and resilience of women throughout history. For me, this celebration transcends the confines of a specific month; it's an ongoing commitment to honor the women who have paved the way for our freedoms and rights today. All women and allies should embrace and honor the strength inherent in sisterhood and solidarity, reminding ourselves of the profound impact of lifting each other up and offering inspiration.
Q: What type of inspiration do you hope to share to all women in your life?
LH: I am reminded of the privilege I've had as an adoptee from Korea to this country. In shaping my own path, I've had privileges not afforded to all, and I am deeply grateful for the chances the universe gave me. This realization fuels a desire within me to make more thoughtful choices and extend a helping hand wherever I can.
In my pursuit of knowledge and inspiration this month, I've delved into a diverse array of literature. Lately I’ve been focusing on autobiographies from Michelle Obama's, "Becoming," to “Love, Loss and What We Ate” by Padma Lakshmi. l also adored the juicy journey of self-liberation in Britney Spears' audiobook “The Woman in Me”, narrated brilliantly by Michelle Williams.
I've also found inspiration in supporting creative women-owned businesses like Greenwich St Jewelers in Tribeca, founded by the dynamic sisters Jennifer and Christina. Their journey of transforming and reinventing their father's legacy into a thriving enterprise embodies the resilience and creativity that define women entrepreneurs.
In addition, growing up surrounded by strong women, particularly my mother, Rosemary, instilled in me a deep appreciation for the value of education and self-worth. Her dedication to improving girls' education in Qatar, despite the cultural barriers, showcased the transformative power of determination and compassion.
Q: If you could tell a younger you one thing, what would it be?”
If I could impart wisdom to my younger self, it would be that no one needs to grant me permission to shine; greatness lies within and I have the power to shape my own destiny.
Looking back on my own journey, when I first ventured into fashion, I specialized in menswear. I encountered challenges as a woman in a predominantly male industry. However, I've learned that talent, greatness and success knows no gender. I would tell my younger self - just have faith in yourself and the world. Nowadays, I take great pride in my ability to design for everyone, (including pets!) at J.Crew Factory .
Q: What is one piece of advice from a woman that has stuck with you over the years?”
LH: One piece of advice that has resonated deeply with me comes from the indomitable Shirley Chisholm: "If they don’t give you a seat at the table, bring a folding chair." This quote encapsulates the spirit of empowerment and agency, reminding us to forge our own opportunities in the face of adversity. I also love the truthful humor in this quote!
